I bought a good condition 234 (being shipped atm) , and i have two old peavey mixers. (600s mk1, md bii).
Im not sure wether it'll be enough to start recording with? I mean im pretty sure the mixers dont have pre's but not sure bout the 234 .
Do i need to buy a seperate pre- unit?

Thanks !

I don't have a 234 so I can't say for sure, but it looks as though it does have preamps in it. On the back panel, there are 4 1/4" jacks labeled as "MIC/INST," and each one has a trim knob. So those look like pres to me!

It doesn't have XLR inputs or phantom power, though, so it's like many older cassette portastudios in that regard.

Regarding the Peavey mixer, if this is the one you have (see attached), then yes, it has mic pres too! I can't see the back panel, but I would assume it has XLR inputs, though I'm not sure about phantom power.

Beagle is correct. There are indeed mic preamps onboard the 234, but they are unbalanced 1/4" connections. You will need a transformer XLR - TS adapter to connect balanced microphones, but the preamps themselves are onboard.

Thanks u guys!
So in general, what you say is that if there is a trim knob for the channel it means that its amplified?
Also if theres xlrs inputs it means the same?

Cheers

I would think, if you're talking about the input to a mixer or recorder channel, then those are safe assumptions. A trim or gain knob is usually a dead give away.
