im planning on buying a yamaha mixer , i have a dbx mini pre amp for my studio projects b1. do i connect the pre then go to the mixer, then to my pc? or do i go, mixer, pre, then to the pc?

thank you

I'd go direct to the recorder with the pre.

One reason not to do so would be the mixer is digital and has some converters better than the recorder (your soundcard).

Another is you want to record several sources at once mixed with the output of that dbx.

so your saying by-pass the mixer all together and go straight to the pc from my pre amp??

For the cleanest signal path, in a word, Yes.

Yeah... that's kinda the reason you get an outboard pre-amp... to bypass substandard electronic design... though in this case, the Yomama desk may be a superior design than the DBX...

When in doubt... use your ears...

What Fletcher said- I strongly suspect the pres in that Yamaha are at least as good, if not better, than a DBX mini-pre, which isn't exactly a Manley. I'd go straight into the mixer, and start saving for a real preamp, which will start at about $500 entry level.-Richie
