Does Anyone Care About Sound?

I design and build hi end speakers and I hate the sound of most every professional sound system I hear.

I'm trying to come up with the money to build something NEW. A truly Hi-fi sound system for playing out. (No, JBL is not Hi-fi but Meyers comes close.) No horns, no compression drivers, no boxy sounding cabinets. Of course, it's going to take a lot of cash and they will be heavy as hell. But great sound is worth it.

Seems like most DJ's only care about LOUD with LOTS OF THUMPING BASS regardless of the sound quality. Is this true?

Not me, and I think most good dj's are good dj's because they love music, every nuance and detail of it, not just the stuff that hits you in the chest when you walk into a club.

Thumping bass has it's applications though :D

i hate clubs with lousy sound systems. And as a vinyl dj I really like it when the crisp sound also is audiable by the crowd...

Yeah, I agree. But I like for them to be the notes I choose to thump rather than that single note many speakers like to boom out. :)

I remember being very specific about what I could hear form sound systems when I DJ'ed a club. But I came to realize that I was the only one who gave a rat's ass if I could still hear the vinyl sound in that "vinyl rap bass" sound.

My point is most club-goers are less interested in how clear the hi-hat is than if the sound in the club is loud enough for them to hear bass pumping. That and which chick/ guy to hit on next... hahaha

Being an equipment designer, I like to believe that the reason most people don't care is because their expectations are low. People are so used to the terrible sound of even supposedly 'hi-end' sound reinforcement systems that they don't really know what good sound is.

I grew on government cheese and canned vegetables and I was very content. But now that I buy fresh organic produce from the local "granola" cooperative, man I'll have to be practically homeless before I go back to that other stuff.

Hopefully this sort of thing will become true for people's opinions of what they hear when they go out - provided the bar is raised and they get exposed. Of course you need to convince artist and clubs to pay for quality to begin with.

I can build systems that not only rock the house, but also wash over your ear drums with warmth, detail and sparkling clarity. Maybe if enough people hear them it will start to catch on. Or, maybe I'm just wishful thinking. Still I'm going to give it a shot!
