does anybody know of an app to remove tape hiss?

A wave editor perhaps (preferably freeware)? Or even a VST plug-in would be OK... Its for some old 4 track recordings that I have started re-mixing in N Track, they are building up a noticeable hiss, I believe due to compression and EQ I'm using to mix...

I have Audacity, but if that has a noise reduction/tape hiss removal tool, then I haven't found it... I used to have Cool Edit 96 which had a noise reduction/removal function, and it worked well if I remember correctly.

How does hiss removal work? I imagine part of it is some kind high frequency roll-off...

i use a copy of coold edit pro 2.0 for my waveform editing. it has a hiss reduction and a noise reduction feature. i fnd the noise reduction can do some pretty amazing stuff so long as you don't get crazy with it.

if i remember correctly, there is a free and LEGAL copy of coold edit 2000 floating around the net somewhere. maybe you could try the demo of adobe audition if it still has that feature?

Sony has an excellent noise reduction plug-in, but it ain't cheap. You take a "noiseprint" of hiss from a section of tape that's blank (or has no sound) and it uses that to remove hiss from the source. It can sometimes take some tweaking, or more than one pass, but it's very effective.

hmm... I'm not having much luck finding Cool Edit 2000. Would I be able to run it in XP anyway? And that other stuff is pretty darn expensive, I mean I'd shell out a couple bucks for a decent .wav editor but I'm not gonna drop a couple hundred bucks on a piece of software when all I really NEED is an app for taking out mild tape hiss...

Anybody else have any suggestions?

I remember that Rokket was dealing with the same issue a week or two ago .....can't recall how he dealt with it, though.
I'll see if I can search out what he did.

For regular analog, most recorders come equipted w/dolby. Use it...If you are running sound through mixer, bottom out all high freqs, use only your mid-range. Run old tape onto new tape using dolby. Should take out alot of white noise.

Cheap and they really perform.

I use two methods which work EXTREMELY well on stereo tracks. GoldWave is a waveform editor which does EVERYTHING. Try it. It is amazing. If that won't get it, I also use WaveClean. Both are cheap shareware and work exceptionally well.
