Regarding effects, the question you have to ask yourself is: "Why'd you buy it if you're not gonna use it?"

Don't skimp.

A rule of thumb that will always stand you in good stead is this: decide how much of a particular effect you want on any given track, and then crank it up another 30%.

How do you think the pros got to where they are today? By being cautious? If you want your mixes to stand out from the rest, learn how to really L_E_A_N on that effect knob!

Queue's FX adages:

You can't learn to swim if you don't get wet....

The wetter the better...

Why dry?

BBB's 30% rule:

Crank to only wet, then mix in the dry signal to about 30%.

aplly the effect slowly and gradually until u get it where it sounds good, then back it up a tad.....

Interesting. I thought I once heard someone say that you should crank effects until you start to hear them, then back off about a third.

Irony, actually. I think it's about one level of humor above punning, but it's the best I can do most times.

You can go to the extreme here.... We actually recorded 100 % pure effects, by just running a non-connected cable into an analog delay, so we could just mix in the pure effect as much as we wanted....

If you want to get it to sound as if you got rid of that nasty headroom on a digital desk, but have to cope with that analog coldness, you can play the plug of the unconnected cable (going to the delay) with your tumb. Gives a nice buzz and clicks...

We really did that...

And how many of your costly studiotime did you waste on this kind of stupid behaviour?

Roel dude, I really really think you should stop smoking that damn weed.

We just needed anything as an input for the delay, which my mastermind-collegue plays as an instrument. Feedback on infinite, slightly touch the unconnected jack, and turn down the delay time.

And so on... :D

You know what they say.... It can never be too wet.

 :D :) ;)

p.s. Envision yourself swimming. :p

I have this custom-built overall-16-voices-stereo-chorus-plugin now.
In the past I had to run every single track thru a seperate chorus-unit... that kept me quite busy since I double-track my guitar-parts at least 8 times. this would give me about 32 guitartracks for a punk rock song, 64 for classic rock and about 128 guitartracks for gipsy king style of music.
now with my patented O16VS-chorus I only have to push a button and the software will do this for me.
btw: there's only that one button - I always use the maximum settings anyway, who doesn't?

My gawd.

I hope most of this is sarcasm.

I mix completetly dry. I dont start adding fx until the end and then I do it sparingly.

My thought has always been...make the shit sound good going in. You know, in the first place.

I hate producers/engineers that overwet everything. Dont use numbers and percentages. Close your eyes and wet it until it sounds like you envisioned it.

Man... What are you saying?!? Don't use numbers?? You have to realize that you aren't mixing for yourself, and everybody likes things different, so you HAVE to use numbers to get something everybody will like... It's like the golden section for visual arts etc. Man, I'm really amazed that you didn't know. It's basics!!

:D

Man, I hope you realize this thread is a joke...

The golden section, what a joke... Now that 30% they's talking about, that has still to be proven wrong!! So you better accept it, or become a painter...

I did realize...upon reading the second thread. I am a little slow sometimes. Everyone will just have to get use to that here. ;)

numbers? there HAVE to be numbers. if there weren't any I wouldn't know in which direction I have to turn my amps gain knob to always get the maximum out of it.
