Damn...
I think I understand what you meant to write, and if I did, you didn't understand me since I never said anything about what I personally think makes someone fresh or not... C'est la vie...
My point exactly, no matter which side of the tracks you live on. Thing is, many of us equate being "underground" with being good and that just ain't true no matter how you slice it. So if I PERSONALLY think a local cat's shit is pure-d-garbage, then I'm NOT gonna keep buying his shit. I don't care if he's straight up in the shelter from 9pm-9am, and gettin' his hustle on otherwise. By the same token, I won't be buying any major release that I think is doo-doo either. Oh, and way too many up and comings do just what you and I both hate: "...taking somebody that got good looks, writing for him and making him a artist..." I think that this whole "underground vs commercial" thing has morphed into a collage of everything good bad and ugly. An good example of what I mean is "freestylin'..." 10 years ago, this meant only 1 thing, today it means 50, and only 1 represents the real meaning.
As far as "shaping the youth," well one can argue that the same battle is and always has been fought. If what you said is true, then does that explain why so many strive to be/sound like the things we all think are questionable at best or only marginally good? I mean, these cats were molded by shit coming out in the mid 80s through mid-nineties... Fortunately, for the real heads (with only a modicum of subjectivity), hip-hop finds a way to keep doin its' thing, regardless of all the bullshit rap we each get forcefed by clear channel one and viacom.
I suppose one could argue that major label boy is "in the shit," too, just a different flavor. That's why so many cats break wide to stay away from powers that be. Relativity is everything. After all these posts, that was really all I was trying to say.
Gec,
I feel you.

...its what comes from inside.I'm not into taking somebody that got good looks, writing for him and making him a artist.I'm not into creating talent.
