How do you as a band, singer, songwriter or musician keep your fans apprised of your latest music news, press releases, exploits, latest songs, CD releases etc.? Are you only updating your web site and profile with that info or do you send out a newsletter? A music fan that signs up for your fan list WANTS to know what you are up to, so you are not spamming them with a newsletter - unless you send them out too often.

Newsletter emailing is a fantastic promo tool for hyping your band. It can be as juicy as you want it to be, as upbeat news is very entertaining to your fans. Realize your fans can be from anywhere in the world so keep it informative for all.

4 C-Things to consider:
Content – keep it entertaining, informative, just the right size (usually short), catchy, humorous if possible and interesting. Always have a link to your web site and music.
Consistent – whether it’s monthly or bi-weekly, have fairly regular emailing so that you don’t fall off the radar with your fans.
Contest – think about a giveaway for a CD or merchandise or a discount on a purchase. Fans will love this.
unComplicated – simple HTML, not cluttered, simple images and ALWAYS include an unsubscribe link.

I have built a small database application that holds the reciepients of my mailing list, and some information about them... name, email, whether they owe my cd... that kind of stuff, mailing address if I've shipped them something..

I also use to to keep track of booking agents, venues, and press contacts.
When mailing list time comes around, I run a query on my database to pull the email addresses for everyone that I have marked "On Mailing List".

I have it preformatted to give me a list of email addresses, delimited by comma, that I can just paste into my email client, and I send it off that way.

I can either manually add contacts, or I built a form on my website that allows people to add themselves.

It works for me, but may be overkill for others.
