Try (pirated) before you buy has become a popular option as the trial versions offered aren't any good - can't see a project through to the end to determine whether or not the package can do just that.
Once a decent prog attracts & holds the attention it's time to get the updates & downloads so buying becomes attractive. 2nd hand is a pretty good opt as well.

dude no brainer, with pro tools that is, just download that shit for free. thats it. thats all you need to do!! you don't even need anything else to start making beatz, just use your computer keyboard to trigger the MIDI notes. its as simple as that. who cares about digi

i mean its just a few clicks away!!

just find it, click it, download it, then your set to make those fat beatz youv always dreamed of. nothing more is needed. the programs great. also you can buy these i-lok's with every plug in ever on it. then you just download those shits for free. it looks like this......

humping-dog-usb.jpg

like i said before. click download and go. its as easy as plug & play!!!

don't steel, you cant sell stuff you steel

Presently, I download everything. I'll be damned if I'm going to go drop $1000 on software/plugins/etc. unless I KNOW it's going to work for me.
I can't say anything about the situation you are in, although i may be in the same place more or less if i have a child soon, but outside of that...I think too many people think there is basic set of software, plug ins, etc, that you NEED to make things work. For me, i was lucky when i started and got my two first programs for free of my brother (who got them from work). But, they totaled about $300 at the time. One was acid pro 3.0. You know what, i still use that program basically daily. I have no plug ins for it outside the factory ones. I never upgraded it and i don't even want to anymore. My point, which has nothing to do with piracy, you can do alot with alittle if you take your time to learn every peice of the program. So many people that have thousands invested programs don't use them to a fraction of what they can do. I feel piracy is fine to a point, i don't personally do it but i can understand it, at first. But if you take the time to learn something all the way through, you start to see how it isn't that pricey.

Oh, and just a bit of continuation on this thread...Lately i've learned from alot of 14-16 year hip hop producers that if you don't have waves platinum, you really don't know what you are missing. Mercury is alot better. That with Nuendo is a good starting point. That's where piracy really gets me. When you need that much to begin to be able to mix down your instrumentals. I actually think it holds people back as it's basically an impossible starting point.

With the way Waves does the whole iLok thing, I frankly have no sympathy if people pirate their software.

I would never buy it in a million years because of the iLok and the fact that they won't issue a new license if some hardware dongle gets lost. I mean, if your computer were stolen, with most software, you'd just install it on the new machine, so there's no hardware dependency. With iLok stuff, if this worthless piece of plastic and cheap electronics gets stolen/lost, you're out the cost of the software. In my mind, treating your customer as criminals is unthinkable, and therefore the way Waves behaves is unconscionable.

Then again, I would never pirate it because it would just give them more fuel for their mistaken belief that piracy (rather than their obscenely high price tag) is the reason they don't sell many copies of their software....

There are other alternatives out there, and particularly if you're just going to pirate the Waves bundle, you should buy from one of their competitors instead (for a lot less money). That way, your software is legit and you didn't buy anything from Waves.... Best of both worlds.

I know that if I couldn't pirate music software, my music-recording ability would be severely hampered. I couldn't be where I am today without it.

I am at my wit's end with Native Instruments

Not so recently I decided it was time to upgrade my aging AMD 1900+ box. Ever since then, I have not been able to activate Native Instruments Komplete 3 (yeah, they're on version 5 now, but the stuff I use most like Reaktor hasn't been updated so I am waiting)... I have tried to install the damn thing like 3 times now, but Native Instruments, in their infinite wisdom decided to change the program activation process... which doesn't seem to work with the old process to the contrary of what they keep saying.

Their tech support is really hard to reach. I still haven't found a phone number. This is ridiculous.

I am seriously tempted to get the Pirated version of Komplete 5. They way I look at it, with the amount of time and effort I've put into making this nonsense work, they owe ME money.

the more I do this stuff and build up my rig, the more I find the giant leaps in quality are from outboard hardware. Can't pirate that, but I lust after software less. It's just easier with good hardware.

My best guitar is a late 60s Les Paul that I "downloaded" from the back of a truck after a gig at a local performing arts centre.

i bought acid pro 6 and adobe audition 3, but i downloaded cool edit pro 2.1 coz u cant buy it no more

be careful with the pirated versions though... most of them have something on it that sends info to another server (why would they bother cracking it for you?)
they could record all your keystokes! take you credit card number and other personal important stuff!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
because music's what you make it
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you were a kid I'll bet that there were playground rhymes going around that your grandparents had recited when they were in first grade, and when you're a grandparent those same damn rhymes will still be there.

This f'ing thread is like that... it's going to be around FOREVER! Die goddamnit, die!

Holy cow! It's the thread that won't die! Can't believe this is still going.

Most pirated software records your keystrokes? C'mon now.

I not only pirate software, but even after the 1700 posts preceeding this one, I have a unique insight into why doing such a thing is justifyable, which I will explain at great length [here]. Etc.

I am currently running on pirated software because...
  1. I am not doing anything commercially or making any money from what I use it for to justify paying for it
  2. I have not yet completed a project fully with it or compared it with other software, so I can't be expected to pay until I am happy with what I am buying

So yes, I will pay for it but when I'm ready. If the companies have a problem with people wanting to run an extended trial of their software before charging them hard-earned cash for it then oh well, open source awaits :) Their loss in the long run.

So I need a new car to express my artistic driving talents. I tried the Toyota Yaris, but didn't like it. It just didn't allow me to do what I want to do and express the ideas I have in my head. Instead, I really like the BMW X6. I think I will go download one tonight from the dealer's lot. Oh, sure...I'll pay for it eventually...once I've made enough money using it.

Oh, btw when I'm not driving, I use Reaper, Audacity, VSTs from CM...

So by your standards a hobbyist (such as myself) shouldn't have to pay for software?

With the free and very cheap stuff that's out there, there is no reason to pirate software other than wanting to steal something you can't afford.

Not that anyone will probably care too much, but I've gone legit now. The only reason I used pirated software previously, as most will remember, was due to monetary issues. So I saved up, bought a decent amp (so I could ditch Amplitube) and ponied up the $150 for ezdrummer (since I still have no money or space for real drums). I miss being able to really tweak sounds in Addictive drums, but I'm legit, so I'll get over it I guess. Plus, from what I hear, Superior 2.0 is gonna be absolutely amazing, and an upgrade is only another $130.

***EDIT***
I see that the crossgrade from EZDrummer is in fact, $230 :-(. The upgrade is from Superior 1.0.
