While I believe that stealing is wrong, I think that 'Piracy' is a pretty loaded term. People aren't going into homes and hijacking software away from those who are legally entitled to it. They're stealing it. It's Software theft, not piracy.

I always buy, however i have been tempted to dl cracks when theres a software im inerested in that doesn't offer a demo. and I don't know anyone who already has it to try it out. I will not spend $100+ for somthing i don't even know if it will do the job or not. but even then i don't steal, i just don't buy their product.

I'm not judging anyone or blast with negative rep. At this stage its an interesting discussion where both parties get to hear different point of views. Nothing wrong with that. It doesn't mean I have to agree, though.

However, when someone says "You either fuck or you get fucked" I'm getting upset, though, coz that attitude make people hate each other. And since when does the latest plugin have anything to do with "survival mode"?? When I was in troubles (and believe me I was) the last thing I had on my mind was how I could get the lastest in music production gear/software. That's ridiculous.

This attitude "Being 'poor' gives me a free pass to steal" makes me sick. How "poor" are you guys sitting in front of your computers and chatting on the Internet? When my wife moved from South America to the US she couldn't believe what is considered poor in this rich country! Am I poor when I can't go grocery shopping? Am I still poor when I can't afford the lastest Cubase software? Am I poor because I can't afford my neighbor''s Porsche? Does it give me the freedom to steal his Porsche?

Just because you can't have what you want -- not need for living -- doesn't give anyone a free pass.

I was saying if he had to ever live on survival mode he would understand how somebody feels who has to look at something knowing its a way out for you and expecting them to say no. You learn to do what you have to to make it. If that happens to be runnin up in your house and beating your girl up while you at work, thats what it is. Any person workin on music, Im cool with, cuz theres alot worse things to be doing. The country is built around pimping the poor. I dont think a person who doesnt have the money to pay those ridiculous prices shouldnt have a shot at doing music. I dont feel bad about folks who are comfortable being annoyed at not getting over as much as they could potentially. I don't blame God for anything, and I am a Christian. Being one has taught me not that NONE of us are perfect or without sin. I don't really need to be a Christian to know this, however, for it is common sense.
This is a debate, not a trial, yet I see that one side see's itself as "good" and sees the other as "evil". I have been slammed with negative rep for my opinion on this thread 11 times because of my opinion, not because of any action. I have not cursed (unlike some of those that slammed me), I have not been overly "rude", I just stated my opinion. I do not own any "pirated" software, and never stated that I do. I use N-track which is priced low enough for me, and the average Joe to afford. The reason I got blasted is because I refuse to judge those that do use "illegal" software, and pointed out that we all do "wrong" from time to time. Yet some feel that they are above that, and NEVER do "wrong", and thus have the right to judge others (and curse them).

It can't be fixed. It can't be stopped, and even the industry admits that. There will always be theft among mankind. To think otherwise is naive. There will always be people that steal it just because they can, even when they really have no use for it.
The only way to stop it (and it still won't stop it) is for the companies to combat it electronically. One way of "curving it" would be to make the demo's fully functional, because it seems from some of the post here, that many people do it because the demos are a mess and unusable. If a program cost $500, I want to try it out for a good 60 days with ALL functions working, because once you pay for it they are not going to refund your money just because it does not live up to your expectations.

That's what Mackie does with their Trackion software. At 100 buxx, amost everyone can afford it and it would be stupid to fiddle on a crack or download for hours & hours.

Its like the subway system: if a subway ticket would cost $1 instead of $3.80 for a single fair, more people would use the subway.

But again, the statement "There will always be theft among mankind." is used by many to justify their stealing.

I know some of the programers in the allegedly mega-rich software companies that are supposedly raking it in at our expense.

Trust me- Microsoft *might* be raking it in, but the relatively small audio app companies are NOT. At all. The Robin Hood "rob the rich to feed the poor" just doesn't work. Its more like "rob the poor and THINK you're robbing the rich so you feel better about yourself."

This is complex software and its not easy or cheap to develop. Its the same falacy that says "CD's are only $.75 for the label to press- why do I have to pay $15?! I'm being robbed!" No, you also have to factor in recording fees, marketing expenses, etc. It likely took about $500,000 to a million to create those tracks...

The audio companies don't sell millions of copies of their software. There aren't that many people doing this, even if there are more than ever. They have to pay for their development costs somehow and that usually means higher prices.

So those who pay for the software are literally supporting the free ride of those who steal it. And you think its strange that those who do the right thing get upset when someone comes along and says "Hey, I'm so smart! I just screwed your ass and got the same thing for free!! Dude! Your prices are going up because of me... and I'll I had to do was wait a couple months for the crack! Suckas!!"

Then get indignant about being called a thief?

I NEVER admitted stealing! I paid for the software I use. I find it funny that people hear (read) what they want to hear (read).

..stealing has nothing to do with being childish or an adult. To want what you can not have, or take what you can is human nature....period.
I guess what makes you a better person is to choose not to steal what you can, thus to try to be a better person by not giving into such impulses.
Although this should not make you feel you are better than others to the point that you can judge them. One should be only his own judge, not the judge of others.

A friend of mine was working at Sonic Foundry here in Madison for almost five years and got laid off along with a bunch of other programmers b/c the company couldn't afford to pay them anymore. He was only making about $30k, which just about covers the cost of living here. Was piracy a reason for this? I don't know. But when potential customers are taking shit rather than buying it, it is cutting into companies bottom line.
