Recording software is way too expensive. I agree with that. Think about it, it's just software on CD-R's being duplicated over and over and over again. It's almost like printing out the software code to a sheet of paper and making copies of them and selling them for $600. Is that fair? Yes, if you think it's worth it.
I was really pissed off when I found the the software on the net for free when I had already paid nearly $1000 bucks for it. The good thing is, if you buy the software, you can always make your self a copy and re-sell the original software on eBay. You could actually end up paying $100 or less for the software. eBay allows you to sell original software. Don't tell them you made a backup copy for your self though. I suspect alot of people do that on eBay.
The software found on the net is by no means any different from what you get from the original. Most of the time, what they do is provide you with the registraion key and the software. They don't modify the software in anyway.
If you can't find the software on the net, you can always pay $15, maybe $30 to download it via a private FTP server.
I however like to pay for my software, because I can afford it. I also like the fact that I know I will get updates and upgrade offers.

At least you do agree that it's worth paying for, Avatuar9. Still, you have to realize that the manufacturer priced their software based on what it cost to develop and market. Programmers salaries, office staff, office space, utility bills, security guards, cleaning crew, shipping costs, supplies for the mens'/ladies' rooms, taxes, office furniture, computing equipment and maintenance, tech support staff, sales staff, the manufacturer's profit, the retailers' profits, etc., etc., etc. are all built into the price you pay to buy it.
It's incredibly naive to talk as if the manufacturer's cost for the $1000 software you bought is $0.20 for a blank CD-R, netting them a tidy $999.80 margin. Yet those who advocate downloading hacked/cracked/stolen/illegal/etc. copies of software never fail to throw out that bit of misinformation.

in my opinion it's a matter of honor... if you're just going out to learn the software then fine download it... BUT the minute that you start making money off of the product that you're using you have to go out and buy it... simple as that... i understand that a lot of amatures out there can't afford to buy the software and that's fine... but the minute you step into the professional realm you have to buy the software otherwise you're treating the software designers like slaves... and that's not right.... hell... i'll sick amnesty international on your asses

by your thinking biotek, if i were to go and download a game and play it without making money at it, is that ok? To me, no. I'm not trying to bust your chops, just to me, software isn't written just for people to make money. Got to admit, it is tempting to get the best of the best, for free, but if it's something you enjoy, you should try to support it. Like somebody said earlier, it's not just the software you are buying, it's the support of the company to help you out and to develop better software.

Students running pirated software today are the experts of tomorrow, buying the software and endorsing it publically.
I think there is a point where you stop evaluating and you start using, that's when it becomes piracy in my opinion.
Interestingly I run a cracked version of protools LE 6.1 (I have two digi 001 cards, bought privately - one even came with LE 6.1 - but I lost the serial number, and have been bouncing emails to digidesign for the past month asking them to let me pay for the 5.3.1 to 6.1 upgrade).

I am not condoning warez. I think it's nice that there are demo versions with functionality like acid screenblast, and others, but it is kinda lame to buy a software for 500 and then not be happy or able to return it.
THAT SAID, I honestly believe you are an asshole if you try to sell warez, OR if you use warez and make a profit. If you are a professional, you should buy your own software, since it's a tool you used to make music. It'd be like stealing a car to go joyriding, and then meeting your soulmate and getting married or something. I dunno, it helps you do it, you should give credit where due. Anyway, they would give it to you if you got a deal anyway, so they could say you use their software! heh.
But on the other hand, i don't really see much harm in people messing around with these cracked versions.... they usually don't learn how to use it all the way despite having invested all the time of downloading it!

It is a moral question though. Stealing is flat out wrong. Not that I haven't done it. And when I did it I was straight up wrong and i even felt bad for a few minutes until I realized "Bill" would never miss the money I couldn't spend.
Sometimes I do wonder about the software prices (especially during the long months I saved and saved for SONAR) and I think they are jacked up a bit higher than they should be and I wonder whose pocket is getting padded and then I realize I will never know unless there is some big Cakewalk Scandal ala Enron and by the time that company gets big enough to have a big scandal like that I will be feeding baby worms with my corpse and so I just sit down and write a morbid song about feeding babay worms. There. I've said m'piece.

Provide a good product at a reasonable price and I'll buy it. Personally I love Acid Pro. I buy each upgrade they make (so far). Sound Forge however, I bought version 4 and each upgrade is just insignificant for me so I don't bother. Now there are plug ins I have bought because I like the company. The last two plugins I bought were Trash and Ozone from Izotope. I really thought the products were worth the price. Now others like Antares tube, just aren't worth buying if you ask me. They don't provide me with anything all that special. I have downloaded certain warez and tried them. But by and large I use what I buy because I know it and love it. I have bought from many companies like Native Instruments, Sonic Foundry (now Sony), and others. But I have downloaded more than I have bought and tried them. Most of which I decided I hated and mostly destoyed my sound. I'm interested in testing the new Waves plugins. My opinion is they are overpriced and overrated, but they could get better.
However, I too use that Bill softwarez stuff. Do you think he'll mind? 3 in 1?
My point is this: make a product worth me buying and I'll buy it. I think my next purchase might be the Novation V-Station. I have tried it and loved it, currently it's not on my system though. For now Absynth 2 is my main synth.
