I was just wondering if I need a mixer to record on a digital 8 track or if I can go straight to the recorder? I only plan on recording one or two tracks at a time.

For multiple tracks, yes, u need a mixer. but u can get away with a multiple ins/outs audio interface.but getting an audio interface with lots of inputs and outputs will be much more expensive than getting a compact mixer for recording multiple tracks.

Are the mixers by cheaper mixers by berringer ok for this? I will use a better mic preamp anyway.

You don't necessarily need one to record, you can use standalone preamps for that. If you don't plan on mixing with software on a computer, though, you'll need a mixer to do the mixing (imagine that...).

Perhaps, budget depending, you might do alright with a two channel preamp like the M-Audio DMP3, and a Yamaha MG12/4 mixer? Both come well recommended in the budget arena, and if you ever need extra preamps you can tap the insert points on the Yamaha. Just a thought.

Yes...they will be perfectly fine...get atleast the behringer UB802. its a pretty good mixer..as for the low end.

"if I need a mixer to record on a digital 8 track"

isn't the answer to this no? Aren't most of those things set up like a cassette 4 track and typically are as good or better than a berhinger?

You don't need a mixer. In fact you don't want one.

- You need a Pre-Amp for Dynamic Mics
- You need SC inputs for Guitar Amp or what ever you are recording

You audio software should have abuilt in mixer that is 10 times more flexible than any Hardware mixer. Have fun.
