i am recording one track (one instrument) at a time.

when i am done recording i start mixing all the tracks--and this is when i do all the panning, volume adjusting and eq'.

so--- am i missing something here or the MIXER is realy something i can leave out of my sound chain?

If you're recording no more than two mics at a time, you don't need a mixer, just two mic preamps, (or one mic preamp if you record just one mic at a time).

If your going to use outboard gear, you probably will want a mixer, so that way routing inline patches & side chaining outboard gear could be a little easier IMO.

No. A mixer would be a waste of your money.

While there are very small, and arguably poor qualtiy mixers, one thing remains constant. A mixer is used to MIX multiple audio inputs. If you are a one man show using a mixer would be akin to a bachelor driving a school bus.

Luck.

How wo uld that be like a bachelor driving a school bus?? I use a mixer to MIX my audio, and I usually have 8 tracks that are already pre-recorded, and then the vox tracks... and I buss them out of the 002 into the mackie, and patch side chains & inline patches to reverb effect units, compressors, and parametric EQ's. You could TRY and side chain. But to my understanding, you would have the mic going to preamp, going directly into interface. HOW would you side chain?? Use nothing but plug-ins?? TRUE you dont NEED a mixer, but I would recommend it if your going to be doing a little more than just tracking your music and that's that...

All gear is different. I know that is rather obvious, but...

Anyway.

I am using an Alesis IO|2 at the moment. It provides inserts on both channels, along with SPDIF I/O and MIDI. Mic pres (w/phantom if you use condensors) drive the SM7B, a notoriously hard mic to drive.

It's a sweet little box. You go with what you know.

Hey I was looking at that box, how is it? I was looking at that IO 12 one or whatever. Does it give good quality? I need something for my other DAW
