Recording, like playing,is an addictive hobby.A person that has the bug bad enough to be considering the purchase of out board gear is likely to continue with this hobby for a long time to come,so why not purchase the best gear you can afford?
Indeed why not? But if you have $500, is it really a good idea to blow all that on a mic pre? How about blowing those $500 on a mic+mic pre+a good soundcard?
I am still of the opinion that buying a $500 mic pre to use with your radio shack mic isn't gonna give you a very good sound, and that it therefore was $500 more or less wasted. And indeed, as you note, that IS a popular opinion around here. There may be a reason for that.
Reg,from what I have read in some of your other post, I know you would like to have an aw4416.thats an expensive purchase.
Yes.
Unless you have some experience with one,you aint gonna know jack shit the day you break yers out of the box,but between manuals and online help you can gradually learn.
Since when do you forget everything you know about recording just because you buy a new piece of equipment?
My point is this:I think it is better to buy quality gear and learn how to use it,than it is to buy cheap garbage
Yes, and I don't think anybody contradicts that. But just as previous posters you have somehow gotten the belief that "Extremely expensive" == "Quality gear" and "everything else" == "cheap crap". That aint so.
and learn that you should have been wiser in the way you spent your money.
I already have learnt how to spend my money wisely. And paying for a sound quality that you can't use is a waste of money.
Once again, for clarity: If you today are using a radio shack mic, plugged into a soundblaster card, to record, then a $500 preamp is a waste of money. Things will STILL sound like shit. Buy a $200 preamp and a $200 mic instead, and save the $100 that is left for something else.
Or something similar.
It still amazes me that some people have a hard time understanding that. Why don't you recommend him to buy a $5.000 mic preamp instead? Quality gear is never a waste of money, right?
