I have a DMT-8vl which is currently my only recording medium. I recently bought a Behringer ADA8000 (8-channel mic preamp) which only has lightpipe I/O. Actually it does have analog outs which are usable by way of lightpipe in. Anyway, the manual for the dmt says that if you want to record 4 tracks simutaniously, you can, provided 2 of them are being recieved via lightpipe. I have been through the menus and can't get signal into the recorder via the ada8000. Does anyone know if these two pieces of gear are actually compatible? If so, what am I missing?

I once owned the DMT8. The lightpipe is an optical S/PDIF I/O connection, not ADAT. The Behringer ADA8000 looks like it only transfers digitally via ADAT lightpipe.

If you are definitely keeping the recorder, get another pre amp. If you want 4 individual tracks, you may be out of luck. Out of curiosity, i used the 2 inputs and recorded 8 tracks at once. I'm guessing the best you could do is record with the 2 inputs on stereo tracks (as many as you need)

Look into the ART DPS

You might want to sell the ADA8000 (which is a great device, btw, but not compatible with your DMT-8VL) and buy an ART DPS, which is a 2 channel tube preamp with SPDIF optical output. I have an ART TPS (basically the same unit as the DPS but without the TPS), and I like it.

The ADA8000 makes a GREAT addition to your VF-16 or VF-160, which both support ADAT I/O.

HTH,
