DIY Diffusors?

Looking at commercially available diffusors, I'm surprised at how much they cost. Many of them look to be nothing more than molded plastic that just reflects the sound waves into different directions. Is there something special about this molded plastic? What if you just used some cheap Halloween masks with insulation stuck behind them? Or, some light weight plastic toys?
Well, it seems like a logical question...

I'm sure you could figure out something from these.
I doubt that lightweight plastic would work very well.
The material needs to have some mass and density to it.

Thanks for the link to the SAE website. The article was very informative and, along with information from others, I've decided against diffusion in my tiny little room. The room is now sounding fairly good with a broadband absorption approach.
Btw, I always enjoy the insights in your posts!
