Hey there,
great to be part of this forum!
I love music and have been recording at home for years, and have continually learned new things and got new gear. However I've been trying for so long to get my distorted guitars sounding right, I use an Sm57 slightly off axis from the center of the cone of my amp, and sometimes i've used a ambient condenser, however I'm having no luck!. I am trying to get a punchy and clear modern rock sound, like bands like Paramore and My Chemical Romance use, but I can't seem to reach them!

Would it be a good idea to use a line 6 pod, or guitar rig 5? What are people's opinions on these virtual amps?

Here's some of my material - soundcloud[dot]com/steveharrisonmusic/i-used-to-fall

Thanks so much!

Love my POD myself.
Try using a couple differnt sounding mic's. Pratice putting one at least 5-10ft away.Record on different tracks and work the EQto get the tone and balance you desire.
What I like about the POD is that once I have found "that" sound, I save it for future recordings

Good luck!

Move the mic around - try halfway from the center to the outer edge of the cone . Turn the gain/distortion down - "less is more" when you record distortion.

Sounded pretty good to me, but I think you would benefit from at least trying mjb's suggestion of cutting the gain. Especially if you're double tracking, the sparser clips on the guitar signal will actually sound ballsier. Not smoother, but more ragged.

What's the bass chain (instrument, effects, amp)?
