directing the signal

Does anyone know how can I get Reaper to only record the audio from my mic, and not from the other sounds my computer makes ( previous tracks playing at the same time), and is there a way that I can feed the signal through reaper and its effects without and hear the output without recording?

If you are using Windows first place to check would be in the 'Volume Control' applet. under properties, recording if you an oppition sometimes labled as 'what you hear' and make sure that is not selected. Essentionally it is an opption that is the sum of all possible sound devices and I've seen the option labeled a variety of ways including 'waves (01)', where 'waves' was on boad sound card only so you might have play around with several options. essentially pick your best guess as the single option you need and uncheck all the others
