I'm recording with a tascam 488 8 track and mixing down to my computer using sound foundry XP4.5, I would like to update my studio with a digital recorder that I can mixdown 8 tracks with 8 outputs and drop them to Vegas Pro software, what is one of the better unit available to do the job and not drain my wallet to much??

How about an Alesis ADAT ? At least you won't have to replace everything again if/when you decide to expand to 16 tracks. You just add another deck.
The media is cheap too, SVHS video tape.

Yo:

You have many boxes from which to choose; so you don't lose, check each out carefully, those that fit your budget.

I use the Yam MD-8; it compresses so the quality is not quite CD; however, it is good and it has 8 outs. Not too expensive.

The Korg units do not compress and from what I've read about them here on this site, they are pretty good and not too hard to learn.
Costs more than a Yam MD.

Roland and Adat and Fostex and Tascam await your perusal. Call all the 800 numbers because prices do differ. In my area, I use Full Compass but there are many to check out and take a close look at shipping and handling charges too.

Have fun,
