Well, a friend of my dad's had this multitracker from the 90's. so he gave it to me.
I don't how to set it up, is working 100%. I need some basic info like the diferrence betwen stereo out and monitor out?
how do i set up the machine with the monitors and also...

Once i've recorded in the fostex how do i transport the audio to a pc? a friend of mine told me i can use an interface with just two channels and i'll be ok since the fostex can only record two tracks simultaneously but how does this work, how do i do this??
I will be using nuendo or cubase. do i need special cables ?
PLease any info will help.

I'd answer more if you wrote in complete sentences... I'm not sure what some of your questions are.

How to set the machine up with monitors - use the monitor outs you mentioned in your previous sentence.
How do you transport the audio to a PC? I don't know that you can, digitally. It seems only to be able to dump to ADAT or similar.

If you're using real DAW software, as you say, use the Fostex as a doorstop and buy yourself a decent interface is my advice.

English is not my native language so sorry man

How can i use as a doorstop? will it record directy to the pc using the fostex as a pre-amp? or it's just a matter of putting the already recorded tracks to a pc? i don't know much about this stuff and don't know how this procedure works and how to set things up in order for the fostex to work and as a doorstop, I can get a interface, that's no problem

and yes i does work with a DAT machine but that format just seems more complicated to manage

I have seen a few interfaces with ADAT inputs. There was a discussion on another thread talking about ADAT connections allowing to extend inputs to certain interfaces as they can have up to 8 channels per connection and one USB. SPDIF can be used for two channels, but it would require to actually record rather than transport/dump the tracks. It cold be workable, but not optimal.

[Update] Having looked up the unit. There is a DAT output, not sure it that is the same thing as ADAT. there is no S/PDIF so it look like to get your tracks to a computer, you would probably have to sue the stereo outs (Recorder Out) to send to the computer using some type of interface. I didn't see the model number the first time I posted so I failed to look it up. So record, send to a computer using your recorder outs. You might want to check to see if the "DAT" is compatible with ADAT. Not sure what that gains you.

what is spdif? i understand the ideas but don't know what is the procedure..
I have a saffire interface ,please expand your ideas. I'm a "newbie"

It is what DVD players use, it is a consider digital connection. You probably have one in your home. DVD players have one or two connections, Optical (TosLink) and SPDIF. S/PDIF can usually use a single RCA cable between two connectors and as stated is a digital connection.

So basically the best way would be to go from your stereo outs to your saffire interface channel 1 and 2. I have to ask though, why use the Fostex at all? If you have an interface what is it giving you that you need? You didn't list model of the saffire so I guess you could be missing phantom power for the mic?

I would say start over. List exactly what equipment you have and what you are trying to do.

I would agree. After looking at the model, I wasn't see any advantages of using it other than using it. Could be a good portable device. But would be painful to use.

If you have an interface and DAW software, why are you stuffing around with a very old standalone recorder? What do you think it's bringing to your recording?

SPDIF - Google... I don't think your machine has it so I wouldn't worry about it.

Your machine does appear to have direct outs for each channel, so you could connect them to your interface, but again, why bother? You're just adding complexity and probably noise to your recording chain.

I'm a champion for standalone recorders, I think they're great. But even I'm wondering why, if you have the set up you have and have no problem getting an interface, you want to use the Fostex. That's walking backwards down the stairs.
Sell it on Ebay !
