I'm a newbie, so if you've seen this question 100 times before, please forgive me. I'm looking to record an album using a digital multitrack recorder (and mix/master, if necessary, in a studio). I don't think I'll need to record too at the same time, but I would need at leat eight tracks. Can anyone recommend a good recorder for around $800-$1000? ANY input would be welcomed.

Yo Goldman:

You have many choices -- high end or middle end; and, you have to decide if you want a DAW or SIAB [Digital Audio Workstation or Studio in a Box] or a PC format.

Since I use a SIAB, I'll just cover a few choices you have:

Brand new: BOSS BR-1600 w/CD burner built-in. Somewhere in the 1k plus change market.

Brand new: Roland VS2000 with CD burner. List 2395.00

Boss BR864 8 tracker: No CD burner built-in -- around 500 dollars.

Of course, you can call Sweetwater, Full Compass, AMS, Musician's Friend -- or get them on line and ask for a catalog.

Or, you can just research here or on line for various models.

Things to dwell upon: Do you need to record 8 tracks at once?

Or, will a 4 tracker input do the job? How many XLR plugs do you want? Built-in reverb? Guitar plug with effects?

I use the Yamaha 2816 but I grew up on several other multitrackers including an 8 track mini-disc box -- not bad sound but lacking in digital qualities.

So, you might want to call those 800 numbers or get on line and ask for catalogs and literature. Best of all, GO to a major vendor if one is nearby and preview as many boxes as possible, as well as monitors, mics, etc.

Welcome to the recording world.

dude, get the korg D1200mkII, 999.99 at your local guitar center. 4 simultanious inputs. 250 different drum patterns built in. a 30 or so gig hd and an on board cd burner.

It's got pretty good time-based effects and good mastering effects. For around 1K that's the best you'll find.

did you guys read the whole post? he wants to take it to another studio to mix and master. i would buy a used adat and a small mixer

Yo Rainingforever [not popular on the links]

Guess we got MIXED up!

But, he could still get a SIAB that would export wave files; Voila, put them in the mixmaster and bake the album.

eBay/ reputable seller/ Alesis Blackface ADAT, avg drum hours should be less than 2,000. DO NOT BUY 1 WITH LESS THAN 250 hours. The blackface are the 1st generation adat's. Head hours can be reset if you know what you are doing. Check out the Alesis forum/

Needs to have 4.0 version software/ LRC (little remote control) and manuel.

If it has error code in the window check the forum.

The head cost $360 to refurbish if its damaged.

The going rate for a Digital Alesis blackface is $175-$350

Pay with a cashiers check/USPS money order, register the mail (so the seller has to sign for it [you can go after them for fraud but It is over a certian $$$ value and I don't remember how much it is.])

This is a recorder only. If you get a decent one for say $250 you still have $$$ to work with so you might be able to pick up a mixer to work with also.
