Yo Goldman:
You have many choices -- high end or middle end; and, you have to decide if you want a DAW or SIAB [Digital Audio Workstation or Studio in a Box] or a PC format.
Since I use a SIAB, I'll just cover a few choices you have:
Brand new: BOSS BR-1600 w/CD burner built-in. Somewhere in the 1k plus change market.
Brand new: Roland VS2000 with CD burner. List 2395.00
Boss BR864 8 tracker: No CD burner built-in -- around 500 dollars.
Of course, you can call Sweetwater, Full Compass, AMS, Musician's Friend -- or get them on line and ask for a catalog.
Or, you can just research here or on line for various models.
Things to dwell upon: Do you need to record 8 tracks at once?
Or, will a 4 tracker input do the job? How many XLR plugs do you want? Built-in reverb? Guitar plug with effects?
I use the Yamaha 2816 but I grew up on several other multitrackers including an 8 track mini-disc box -- not bad sound but lacking in digital qualities.
So, you might want to call those 800 numbers or get on line and ask for catalogs and literature. Best of all, GO to a major vendor if one is nearby and preview as many boxes as possible, as well as monitors, mics, etc.
Welcome to the recording world.
