I'm looking for a Digital 8-track to replace my Tascam 4-Track cassette recorder. I need to record 8 tracks at once and don't need any extra stuff like internal effects or saved takes. Just a meat and potatoes digital 8-Track. Anybody have any suggestions?

i think a yamaha md8 can record all 8 at a time but i'm not positive... the fostex can't unless you have an adat connection i think, or something else... i'm guessing the best to options would be either a yamaha md8 or jumping up to a seperate recorder and mixer and getting an adat or another mdm or harddisk

Yeah, I'm looking for the same thing, and I'm going for the MD8. It seems like the most upgradable unit, I buy this now then whatever effects, compressors, preamps I want, then when I have enough cash and when computers are cheaper I'll buy a good DAW.

This will be my setup, anyone have any comments:
-Yamaha MD8
-Line 6 Pod
-Art dual tube preamp
-Presonus Blue Max Compressor
-Possibly a Lexicon MPX-100
-Mics, Cables, etc...

Yo Mr. Kristopher:

Yes you can record all 8 tracks at once, I think, with the Yam MD8. It's maddening to own the equipment and not remember. I never cut 8 tracks simultaneously; I usually cut two tracks then overdub several other tracks to finish the song.

There is a great deal of chatter about the Boss 8 tracker because it sounds good for the most part and it is EASY TO USE. Their advertising says: MANUAL SCHMANUAL..who needs it! or something to that effect. So, you might want to investigate this product.

Here is a little tip about the Yamaha MD-8.

A short while back I had a data disc in the machine, MD-8, and the LCD lit up with a message that said my disc was scratched and I should discard it. Well, they cost a few bucks and the LCD lit up while I was recording. So I reasonsed that some dust must have creeped into the disc or the MD-8. I got out my vacuum cleaner and gently ran it over the MD-8 while the disc door was open and then I carefully vacuumed the disc. Put it back into the unit and PERFECTO! I'm still using that disc. Just thought I'd pass this on in case any of my MD-8 colleagues run into the problem.

The Boss only has two analog ins- you definly wont be recording all eight at once with that machine.

Yeah, I've been looking at the Yam MD8, and I have some questions about that -- How much time can you put on a single disk? What else does it have in it (effects and stuff)? What's the eq like?

The Boss machine looks pretty darn cool. I have a question, though. It only has a 100mb zip drive? How much recording time does that allow?

Yo Mr. Kristopher:

You can record in the 8 track mode on the Yamah MD-8 for 18 minutes. Enough time for a few complete songs.

In the 4 track mode, you can record for 36 minutes.

Two track mode, 74 minutes on two track special discs which are less expensive than the data discs you need for 8 track recording.

There are no built-in effects on the Yamaha MD-8; however, there are two FX busses. I have two FX units hooked up to my MD-8.

The EQ is, three banded, I think? I am at the office and can't quite remember. But, it does a nice job. I know there is a hi and a mid and a low EQ knob. There may be another mid-type but there are three for sure.

Learning curve is not too demanding. You can get started right out of the box; however, to learn the nitty-gritty things, you need this channel and WE NEED A YAMAHA MD-8 FORUM Senor DRAGON.

There are several members who post on the MD-8 and/or are willing to share their expertise. For the money, it's a nice box; there are probably better boxes that match CD-quality; but the MD-8 is a pretty good set-up for the money. They are selling for around 900 hundred US skins.

The MD-8 has XLR plugs on two channels as well as 1/4 inch phone plugs. It sends out a two track mixdown via RCA plugs. It also has phantom power for those mics that require phantom power. It will record all 8 tracks at once if that is your wish.

It also has group recording and, for beginners, direct plug-in recording.

The unit has pan control and a few other buttons that I've not yet mastered.

Happy Tracking,
GH

The unit also has two TCR [I think} plugs for in/out to FX or something like that. Never have used them and don't quite understand them at this time.

I would really, really appreciate a forum on the MD8. I've been making some nice recordings with it over the last few months, but haven't even scratched the surface as far as what I believe it could do...
