Yo Mr. Kristopher:
You can record in the 8 track mode on the Yamah MD-8 for 18 minutes. Enough time for a few complete songs.
In the 4 track mode, you can record for 36 minutes.
Two track mode, 74 minutes on two track special discs which are less expensive than the data discs you need for 8 track recording.
There are no built-in effects on the Yamaha MD-8; however, there are two FX busses. I have two FX units hooked up to my MD-8.
The EQ is, three banded, I think? I am at the office and can't quite remember. But, it does a nice job. I know there is a hi and a mid and a low EQ knob. There may be another mid-type but there are three for sure.
Learning curve is not too demanding. You can get started right out of the box; however, to learn the nitty-gritty things, you need this channel and WE NEED A YAMAHA MD-8 FORUM Senor DRAGON.
There are several members who post on the MD-8 and/or are willing to share their expertise. For the money, it's a nice box; there are probably better boxes that match CD-quality; but the MD-8 is a pretty good set-up for the money. They are selling for around 900 hundred US skins.
Enjoy twiddling the dials,

The MD-8 has XLR plugs on two channels as well as 1/4 inch phone plugs. It sends out a two track mixdown via RCA plugs. It also has phantom power for those mics that require phantom power. It will record all 8 tracks at once if that is your wish.
It also has group recording and, for beginners, direct plug-in recording.
The unit has pan control and a few other buttons that I've not yet mastered.
Happy Tracking,
GH
The unit also has two TCR [I think} plugs for in/out to FX or something like that. Never have used them and don't quite understand them at this time.
