Does anybody own one of these? I'm thinking of getting one to add a P/J type to work with. Do you feel they're worth the $450-$500 range they're in? I don't gig as much as before so I can't justify something too pricey.

I haven't counted out pursuing used similar basses but the Fender looks kind of yummy....

Thanks for all responses

No, I do not have one of those. I have the Fender Squire that looks almost identical. It playes really good and I have had it for years. I think that Bass Freak has one PM him and ask him about it.

I have one and think it's an excellent value. Bear in mind it's the only bass I own, as I'm primarily a guitar player and just play bass for our church's praise team. Based on my research and subsequent play-testing, it seemed to be one of the best deals out there. The build quality seems very good, and I don't have any hum issues - through my research I ran across some owners who had problems with hum, which I did not run into. I tried out three different Deluxe P-Bass Specials, with two of them being excellent (in terms of playability and sound) and one not really grabbing me. Good luck in your search.

I own a MIM Jazz Deluxe V and absolutely love it. However, the MIM P-Bass Special was a very close second. It seemed like a very good bass for the money.

I have an MIA P-bass HotRod with the P-J P/U combo, - great guitar. Before I purchased it I had also tried the MIM special - which I thought was a decent guitar and played much *better* than a Squire.

BTW.... I'm a guitar player....

I would go for it since I like the sound that you can get with a P-J combo. Just having one or the other is far too limiting IMHO.

My first bass was a Fender Pbass Lyte with active P and J pickups.

If you want the real P deal, get a straight Precision. There is indeed a tone difference between a P and a P+J.

Another reason is, if you want the real P deal, put flats on it. When you want a J tone, flats won't do it as well as rounds. If you need a J tone, get a J-bass also. The authentic P tone is closely tied to "vintage" pickups. The hotter ones (DM 146, Duncan Hot models, etc) no longer "thump." Loss of thump is intrinsic with the hotter pickups.

Basses are specialized tools, and none is a jack of all trades (done well). I own a P with flats, a G&L L1500 with rounds for the Stingray vibe, and a fretless Jazz for that mwah-fretless thing. Each does its job well, but will not do the job of the other two.

If I could, I'd get a nice Precision and a nice Jazz to get a plethora of great tones, but I'm not touring 300+ nights per year and can't justify the expense (not to mention limited storage).

As a follow-up, my local Guitar Center had a model for me to try out which I liked very much. It was comfortable to play and I was confident I could get some tones I could be happy with. I'm still a few months away from purchase so please keep your thoughts coming.

Thanks!
