I'm about to borrow some mics for testing, but it's the first time using my new setup, and as of yet, I don't have any mic pre's. I was just wondering if the first two channels of the delta 1010 are decent enough pre-amps? I no longer have the manual for the soundcard- is there phantom power on these two inputs? And is it always on?

Cheers.

So So preamps with no phantom power.

There is a option on the card though if you would like to cut the
pres down to line level. I guess if you have need for phantom
power "condensor mics" then you should invest in a pre with
phantom power.

I believe you can still get a manual of M-Audio's website.

I'm not ashamed to admit, I like my 1010LT cards. They work for me. However, I don't find much use for the on-board mic-pres these days. I moved the on-board jumper to use them as line inputs giving me a couple extra line-in's. I used them for a short while back when I didn't have anything better, I thought they were just fine. The last question I read was "define decent"....good question. If you don't have anything, they'll make due for practicing, playing around and having some fun and thinking about what you really need.

Well, I don't really know much about mic pre's to be honest. I'm going to be using these mics to do vocals for an EP, so I want the best sound possible. I can probably borrow a pre-amp from this store as well- regardless of price, what kind of pre should I look for? (Going to be saving up for whatever gear I need, so price isn't really an issue at this point.

Thanks

Well pre amps are probably the most expensive single piece of
equipment you purchase and the ones most people will recommend
usually run in the $1500 on up range. You'll want your preamp to match
your mic and your mic to match what ever your recording.

How many tracks you going to be recording at a time? 2? 4? more?

I picked up a UA DCS portable mic pre 2 channel a month or so ago that
seems to be doing a good job and has a lot of bells and whistles. They
go for $1000 to $1200 so that would be $500 to $600 a channel.
Also Sytek has a 4 channel pre for around $900 so that would only be
about $225 per channel. I really think these are about as low as you
should go. Also both of these pre are extremely clean with almost
zero coloration which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on
what your recording.

I guess the other things to know would be the place your recording in
and what your using for monitors.

Well, whilst I'm trying out these mics I'll mostly be doing vocals. Possibly some Acoustic Guitar and Percussoin.

I'll eventually need to be able to record up to 16 channels at once. But for now, a single channel pre will be fine.

My new room will be treated shortly, and I'm currently using KRK 8's for monitoring.

I'm trying out several mics- a couple of Rodes, the M-Audio Sputnik, Neumann U87 etc.

Thanks for the info Randy.
