Delta 1010 again but...

Hi people
I have purchased a Delta 1010 and have been using it according to the defined recording set ups or at least similar ones that apply to my system. How ever i was curious about the Delta Control Panel.

Do you have to use this to patch the ins and outs or can it be by passed?

Also call me naive here but why if the inputs and outputs are balanced do they need to be stereo pairs, paning left and right to audition the signal on each track or channel? Hence whether or not you can by pass the software mixer.

However i am assuming this should not make any difference as being balanced paning left for say track 1 and right for track 2 the output from a single track will still be in stereo?? or is this just a silly question?

I think it's because Windows only handles stereo, be it different channels on left and right or the same for mono. So, 8 mono ins are seen as 4 stereo ins by Windows. It's really the same thing, only grouped differently. I may be mis-informed but that's what I've heard.

However, balanced has nothing to do with stereo or mono, it's just a way to transfer a signal through a cable.

I'm not sure if I understand your question but here goes: Track one and two will be mono tracks. If you were to pan either of them "centre" (and play it alone), you would have a mono signal from both speakers.

It seems i have some of my terminology awry too, at least i have been corrected in that departement.

However i neglected to mention i have a G3 so,if Windows only understands stereo sound, what about macs, or is the same principal applied despite how a mac percieves the audio?

Curiously and i never thought about this before, and due to previous clearance of my own errors, is analogue only ever in mono seeing as the inputs on the 1010 seem to be mono? Or am i again barking up the wrong tree?

And another thing while i'm at it, ahem, if you have stereo outputs on a piece of hardware (as in left and right outputs) i am presuming you would connect them up to the 1/2 stereo pair and pan it centre to recieve the correct signal. Or does this not even matter, assuming that despite it being inout as mono the entire singal will be audidioned as stereo? hmm am i confusing myself here.

Like i said its not really a recording problem as such i just like to justify any logic behind the way bits of kit work or not as the case may be.

I'm guessing that Macs use the same approach on stereo/mono files. Perhaps because it makes it easier to make SW for both platforms. Dunno.

I didn't folllow you on your last question but I think the answer is "cheese-wiz".
