yep totally agree, listened a couple of times already with relish,, i like your style, & my vote is don't change (what you were saying about your vox!) it's YOU! :thumbs up:

Excellent. Thanks Rob.

As for vocals, I have tried and failed at all sorts of techniques really. I like the not-so-popular technique of two takes in unison panned wide. It's unnatural sounding, and I often get called out for it, but I tend to like it. The holy grail for me is probably just to get one take/track of lead vocals with minimal processing to sound good on it's own, but that's pretty hard (for me anyway).

I hope it's apparent that on the choruses here, there are separate harmony parts sung and panned to either side...I liked those parts and wanted them to be heard. I have on other songs though sung harmonies throughout and blended to taste (ie. telephone wire), but that can get overwhelming to the listener after a while.

On this song, I actually left the scratch track on at a very low volume, and then re-recorded the lead vocals a week later. They lined up well enough and so I left them both panned up the middle. You can barely hear the scratch track, but you'd notice if I toggled it on and off, you know? My vocal lines are generally so simple that I can sing them weeks apart and they line up almost exact. In this case the scratch track was one take and the final lead vocal was one take. Maybe I should invest more time in that??? :)

Ace, thanks for all the info Heat - it's always really interesting to hear how other folks arrange and record their sound. Trialing and failing must be two of the most common experiences for solo homerecording multitrackers - it took me ages to be able to get anything more than a single track of vocals on a song. Early attempts at layering were just too messy, and I think the harmonies that the likes of Steen and Propman manage to (seemingly effortlessly) lay down will always be beyond me :D

That panned double vocal is definitely your sound and it works well, so I wouldn't beat yourself up about not being able to do it another way.

Yay! 6:08 seconds of coolness was actually the working title, but I thought better of it at the last minute. Thanks a lot for checking it out girl. I'm glad you liked it.

Very nice - thank you jiff!

You know, you work away on these things for a while in complete isolation and you never really know for sure how it's going. Putting it out there for others to hear can be nerve wracking. Hearing that people actually enjoy it is very gratifying. Thank you.

Cool. Yeah, those two are like harmony-generating machines!

Dude I love this. Bass line is AWESOMELY AWESOME. Love the lead vocal and effect you are using on it. You sound a little like Damon Albarn on this. The loops don't really bug me, and they are pretty huge and laid back - reminds me a lot sonically and style wise of a loop collection I have called BURNING GROOVES. Like the tremolo picked electric parts (of course). The only mix nit I have is that there are some nice little lead lines going on that I would like to hear a bit more - and the main melodic lead could come up a lot.. GOOD JOB DUDE

Hey - thanks a lot chuck!

So, there's a lot of guitars here, but very little "lead" guitar until the end (basically the whole 2nd half of the song!). There's some dual, harmony slide parts mixed in there that I'm having second thoughts about. They're starting to sound like something I did simply because I could and not because I should, you know? It makes me feel like I'm listening to a Kansas song or something for a few seconds there...not sure it fits?

The lead at the end is buried. I think I'd like to hear it come up, although I didn't want it to be a "check me out - I'm a guitar solo!" kind of thing. As it is, I can't even really hear all of the notes and I know what I'm listening for.

Perhaps a remix is in order. I have so much trouble editing existing soundcloud tracks though....

Thanks again!!

I was reading somewhere the other day that tunes on THE BOX sound much better! i don't know how true it is?,, maybe worth an upload?

IF you do another mix PLEASE don't erase tracks just turn-em down,,so you can put em back when you realise,, if it ain't broke don't fix it!! :D

I LIKE IT AS IS,, well the gtr @ the end could be a tad louder(it's ,,,,ing good!)

The Clinic is going through a purple patch at present: a bunch of very cool tracks that arrive almost completely sorted.
THis track fits into that patch - good stuff indeed.
Thoughtfull & slightly psych is the new black!
A little more volume on the outro guitar is all I'd ask for.

Thanks again for the kind thoughts. Do you mean dropbox? I've used it and it works great, I've just been having fun with soundcloud lately...it says you have to pay for "pro" membership to update a track though .

I won't delete anything - don't worry.

Thanks for checking it out ray. I'm glad it's sounding ok to you.

There seems to be some consensus on the outro guitar. If I could just take this exact mix and make just that one modification I would, but inevitably, when I go back in, I always seem to (purposefully or otherwise) change other stuff...it never sounds quite the same. I'm gonna try though and will share in this thread if anyone is interested.

For some reason my first mix is almost always the best...I don't do so well at revisiting things.

Thanks again!

No not Dropbox, i've got that as well!

the other one is called THE BOX! (& it has nothing to do with women!!) just google it!

one of the guys on the reaper forum said it,,, i tried it, i did think it sounded better,,, but then again whenever i've put stuff on soundcloud

i've hated it(the sound i mean) & i thought, it's because i can't mix yet,,but it did sound better on the box???(all in my mind???)

I love it. Everything about it sounds great. It took a totally different direction from the intro and I like that. The vocals are cool. and the mood of the song is very cool as well.

Ok, thanks. I'll check it out. I really don't have a problem with the sound quality on Soundcloud/Soundclick, etc. While I consider myself something of an audiophile compared to the average Joe, I really just don't seem to be as particular as most people on HR about file types and often can't tell the difference between different grades of MP3s...the 128 kps files on Soundcloud sound pretty much like my original CD versions to me??

Awesome. That's great to hear. Thanks reganito.

I know so little about metal that I often skip those posts, but I see you have one up and will try to check it out later. Thanks again.

I did a new mix last night with a boost to the outro guitar and hopefully little else changed. I'll try to post a link tonight if anyone's interested.

new mix 05.08.13

Ok, here's a new mix from last night as a 320 kps MP3 on dropbox:

I'd appreciate it if anyone would listen (at least try part of the outro (scroll forward about halfway)) and let me know about the lead guitar level. I tried not to change much else, although I may have cut some highs on the room mics/overheads and may have reduced the bass level just a tad. Is the lead guitar too loud now, or is it better this way? I think I prefer this, but am not 100% and don't want to overdo it. Thanks :D!

yes
ok for me this is perfect,, that's what i'd be thinking if i'd recorded it,

really, really like the sound, feel, groove everything,,,,,,,,, old hippie see!

right, this is where it get's interesting, can anybody suggest,,,or can you think of ANY way this can be bettered?

coz like i say, i think it's perfect,& i'd stop & publish!

so it's at this point, i can learn a LOT! (would it be ok for me to download this to go in the folder with DRIFT which i still listen to! i'd totally understand if you say no & get rid of DRIFT as well & pay for it,, but i'm a BIG fan of this very genre (whatever it is?))

Wow. Thanks man. That is super nice of you.

There are a ton of little things wrong here and there, but none left that really bug me and I think this one kind of came out more or less the way I wanted it (more than some anyway). You've been very encouraging, so thank you for that.

Go ahead and download to your heart's content! I have no commercial plans for these tunes (I feel silly even having to say that), so if anyone can enjoy them now, they should. No clue on genre either, and the fact that it isn't easily placed in a particular category makes me happy for some odd reason...

Hey Pete, I think the lead level on the Dropbox version sounds great, though I didn't have a problem with the levels on the old one either. It doesn't even seem that much louder to me, but I guess the notes are articulated a little better. Sounds great!

Thanks Erik. Yeah,it's probably a case where I'm listening over and over again and obsessing over something that doesn't really impact the listener much at all. The fact that it doesn't sound too different to you is probably a good thing. I think I'm done with this one.

I actually already finished up another tune this past week (unheard of!) which I'm more likely to need help with. It seems kind of lame to post a second track while I still have one in circulation here though, so I will wait patiently...:eatpopcorn:
