Defective (I ripped off Heatmiser's title!!!)

I've been getting lots of contradictory advice on some tracks lately too. I think that may be a good thing? I mean, if everyone (or the majority) says basically the same thing (like, turn down the bass and turn up the vocals or something) then there's probably something to it.
On the other hand, If lots of people are giving very specific advice that is contrary to each other, then maybe they kind of cancel each other out?

I find that confusing when it happens. It means that in addition to learning your own monitors, you also have to learn your listeners. It's not just that some people have dubious monitoring environments and don't hear stuff (check how I heard 'how' and the word's not even in the song :D), but it's also that how some people listen and what some people hear is actually useful to me (and others, not so much). What's not confusing is this: somebody here says they're hearing something that ain't right in a mix I post here, so it makes me go back and listen with fresh ears. Sometimes it's just so dead obvious that I'm all grateful and make an adjustment right away. Other times, I figure I'll go with the way I mixed it and take my chances.

I really appreciate all the advice I get here. But sometimes, I don't know who's listening on what, because if one's thing's true, then the other thing can't be.I had to look at my lyrics to make sure, but the word "how" isn't even in this song. Not even once.

Listened again (early afternoon, no alcohol involved this time). That opening guitar still hurts.

'be' 1.08 1.18 1.58 2.08 3.08 3.16 Yeah, there's no 'how' - cognitive dyslexia on my part.

Really liking this tune, RAMI. It moves like a good moving thing.

David Byrne would love to do this one. He'd eat it up. I can see him doing it in my imagination. Wanna make some money? Send it to him.

Thanx man. Yeah, I worked on the "be" a bit, maybe not enough. The opening guitar does sort of feedback at times. I could copy and paste a few non-feedbacking ones on the annoying ones. I'll have to think about that, I sort of like the "defective" sound of that riff, but I could easily change my mind in a few months when I give it a fresh listen after not hearing it for a while.

Thanx a lot.

Too lazy to Google, is he the guy from the Talking Heads?

Yeah, and he's doing cool stuff with St Vincent these days, too. That's very cool that you don't know him much - you've come up with a tune that he could really get behind without ever having been a fan.

Haha - Rami you did it again! As ever, the mix sounds so spacious and the riffs totally rock. Very original to my ears. I'd like the lead guitar soloey bits to be given more punch and volume like the riffs going on around it. Great stuff, though!

I really like all of the elements of this mix except for the intro/middle guitar. It's pretty shrill. The wide rhythm guits seem to have some "roundness" and warmth to them, which is good, but the middle one is pretty harsh. At least in the intro and break anyway. It fits in better once the song is off and running. I think your drums and vocals sound particularly good on this one.

Thanx a lot Greg.

I know that guitar won't be a unanamous favorite, but if it's only really annoying during the intro and break when it's alone, I don't mind. Because of the title and feel of the song, I like that guitar being a little "annoying" when it plays alone. Not trying to make excuses, I'd probably not use that sound if I somehow was able to know what the comments about it would be, butthe riff itself is a little awkward, so I can live with the sound of it also being a little off. Like I said to dobro, I can easily re-track that part if I listen againwith fresh ears and really want to change it.

Thanx alot for the listen and comments, man.

Thanx a lot Johny. Are you talking about the lead break/bridge or do you mean that intro guitar that greg's reffering to? If you're talking about the leads in the sort of bridge, I agree. I didn't want it to be as loud as a guitar solo, but I might have tucked it in a little too much.

I mean the ones you agree on.

RAMI,
Very cool song & the break down is really good.
I have to admit that I don't particularly care for the 1st part of the intro. The revist in the break down serves it better.
Just a personal pref thing.
REALLY good word play in the lyrics and I enjoyed the general theme too.
Recording? mate, I loved your work from the get go but since you treated your room the stuff has stepped up to another level entirely.
Playing? You know, what the big bad wolf said: You gotta get hot to play it cool!

Love it! Funky rockin' good fun. I really like the extra measures of tasty licks, use to call it fusion. Mix was clear and solid.

Thanx a lot Ray. The room helps, but I also think I'm writing and recording my best stuff in the last year or so. Changed a few things besides the room and it all seems to be coming together since then.
