Meh...
So earlier in the week I had Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" stuck in my head for days. So I thought it only fitting to do a cover of it. Please let me know what you guys think and if there are any big things that stick out that I should address.

Listen HERE

Thanks,
Garry

That was a good fun listen Garry. Performance good and punchy mix - sounds done to me.

Impressive turnaround to have completed all that in less than a week too.

Good job at an original remake, the drums are a tad jumpy for me in the intro but the rest is good IMHO. I think your lead tone is pretty sweet!

That was great! The mix is a little muddy in the mids, I think...but fixable.

One of my favorite tunes and composers.

One thing...at 1:29 the bass plays the minor third [F] a lot...under what should be a D-7. It makes the chord sound like an F maj. Just patch in a D- bass figure or notes from somewhere;

Then at 1:56, the chord should be A7sus. The arpeggiating guitar plays the minor third in the figure. Sounds funky....like an A-7. Not quite right.

But it's a fine job!

Interesting take on this song.

I have never been able to stand the original, so this is a distinct improvement in my view.

I like the clean guitars plenty. You have a pleasant voice, as well.

Mix sounds pretty done to me.

Thanks a lot guys!

Jeff - I hear you; however, I'm going to claim "artistic license" on this one so I don't have to do anymore work. ;)

I've always loved this song, grew up hearing it, but never know who it was from. I thought you did a real great version of it. Your voice sounds great, I wish it was a little more prominent in the mix. I would pull the heavy guitars down a bit during the chorus, to give room for vox. Also, the heavy guitars tend to be a little too static, they don't seem to breathe much, I'm not sure how else to explain it, but it's a little fatiguing to the ear after a bit. I still like your version a lot - great job. :D

Yeah, what Maxi said. I think the prollum is that we have an imprint of the tune in our heads. The dynamic fold in the verses, and the changes, are really worn into brain grooves.

But it's a real nice work.

I usually don't listen at covers. But this one is a special tune. Y' done a good job w/it.

Very Nice, I love the original and this does the original and Gerry Rafferty a lot of justice.

Really enjoyed this! I don't know if it's just my crappy headphones, but the mix sounded slightly brittle and crunchy to my ears. You have a very classy voice, though, and the arrangement was ace. :)

Lol, you musta loved 80s radio Dog. Fun tune. I think the vocal lacks prescence but I think you said you use an SM-58 is that right? I also, think you have an above average voice, real nice tone. If thats how you sound on a 58 I'd really like to hear you on a Neumann :D

Thanks a lot guys. Each time I mess around with recording a track like this I always learn a little bit more.

PDP, I have always been familiar with all the 80's radio tunes but was never a big fan, but that's when I was younger and thought "If it's not Crass, it's crap. If it's on the radio, it's sellout crap". But now I have a greater appreciation for music in general and I'm going back and listening to a lot of songs that I used to hate and I actually like them now. Who knows, I may even do a cover of Corey Hart's Sunglasses at Night! hahaha

Yes, I use a SM58 through a M-Audio USB Fast track. I use the Fast Track for the guitar/bass too. I have a nice guitar rig I use when I'm playing with my bands, but I don't have the means to record it and have it sound remotely as good as I can get it virtually.

Here's how my voice sounds through a decent microphone. Strike the Design - Paper Thin

Hey man, cool version... I like the crunch on the guitars a lot....wonder if it would sound cool to take the crunch out at the verse...and just have it for bridge and the hook...kinda reminds me of The Foo Fighters version....great vocals as well...thumbs up!!

Okay, so I did a quick remix to try and give it a little more clarity. Is this better? Worse? Meh?

This is real good man. Very cool take, you've brought it to life. What it lacks is a bit of polish, like having the drums stick out a bit more clear, not necessarily louder. Good work!

This is a very gritty version and I like that you took on a song that is quite well known and challenging song that is difficult to interpret uniquely or otherwise. Having had a careful listen I think the vocals are great, almost identical to the original, though the guitars are a little heavy in the mix, and seem to me to be pushing the vocals back. I like the gritty sound you've created here, but its a little heavy on the bottom end for me. Apart from that love it! Sounds good! :)

Thanks Joe! Some day I'll figure out how to get your monster sound. haha

Carla, some people like it "a little heavy on the bottom end" if you know what I mean... hahaha

Queepy, dammit! I thought I was the first to do a "rock" cover of this tune. :)

Well, nothing wrong with taking the song "metal," or whatever genre you feel it is- I like that sort of thing when it is done right, and insofar as "doing it right," you deserve kudos for it- others have done well with that, like Social Distortion's cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." (Cash is quoted as saying he loved SD's cover.)

But, Good GOD, am I the only one who can tell the damn lead guitar is FREAKIN' OUT OF TUNE??!??? I mean, out of tune on EVERY DAMN NOTE! Man, re-record that lead guitar track before you do another thing! This is inexcusable- and the list of unacceptable excuses includes "bending notes" (no one bends EVERY note) and "Hey, man, that's my tone!"

Man, it should have NEVER gotten as far as posting here with that not fixed.

stevie,,while i think you took it to heart a little, i have to admit i was thinking of making the same comment. (you mean his bends right??)

The famous repeated bend should be minor third,,you're pulling it waaay sharp.

Such a minor pick, but for me, something like that kills everything else.

a few other things.
i thought maybe the clean guitar was a little upfront when the vocals came in, and i'd probably wanna hear more a snappier snare, but i'm listening on ns10s with sheets over em (temporary setup home from uni). lol

at 1:57 the word now, and 3:30, the word 'on', you're harmony makes the chord minor.
In the original i don't think there's a harmony, but i'm pretty sure the chord is a major.

at 5:02 i'd wanna smooth the transition between the 2 lead guitars. Maybe make the solo tail off a bit neater with volume automation or verb?
That's probably personal preference though. it just caught my ear.

I could be waaay off on that one.

Really really good sounding mix though :) enjoyed listening to it....and GREAT voice!!!!
