death metal vocals

I'm trying to recreate the recording of Steve Tucker's vocal on Morbid Angel's last album "Gateways to Annihilation." It's a very wet sound, but hard to hear distinctly because the mix is so big. Any suggestions from anyone familiar with the album?

im not really familar with "gateways" but, i heard trey did alot of layering with the guitar tracks.
I dont use any effects on my vocals. I do all my growls= mic-pre-compressor-lil bit of eq- thats it ,you got to have that girth in your voice to start with , it makes it much easier to make it sound big in the mix. Because it will get muddy in the down tuned guitars and kick drums.
