Oh REALLY????
ok maybe a stupid question, but hey..... everything i've asked till now was stupid. is it possible to use a DCC recorder instead of an adat? DCC is eight track for sure, but i dont know if thats the same thing...
it's great though, and as i have got one it would be great if it worked...

DCC -- isn't that Digital Compact Cassette - the failed (in North American) "digital cassette" format that Philips came out with? It used a lossy compression scheme similar to the one used for MiniDisc. Anyways - it's a 2-track format, not a multitrack format and not in any way comparable to an ADAT. Given its limited acceptance, it is probably not a format investing much into - but if you already have it, make use of it!

hmmmm...
i'm pretty sure it's an eight track, but your right about the rest anyway. it's kind of a minidisk but then more of a cassette. i'll ask my dad he'll know. (he bought it when this was the new promising medium which was gonna smash the CD (LOL)

No... it is definitely NOT an 8-track format - it COULD potentially be a 4-track, but I've never heard of any units being built. Trust me, it is 2-track.

okay i asked my dad and well frankly we're both wrong!
The tape has 9(!) tracks but 8 are used as a 4x2 track to increase playtime and one track is used tto get rid of noise(or so says the manual) actually you came a lot closer than i did now i think about it.
tanx anyway

ps what's your opinion on the fostex VF-16?

uhh ok...

no offense to your pops ... but I'm pretty sure DCC is only 2 tracks.
I have one and Bruce nailed it ... "the failed" format for lossy compression" ... mini disc won. Which surprises me because I really like how this deck plays regular cassettes ... hmm ... I wonder if those are considered failures too?
Actually I think when it comes to lossy compression, mp3 won hands down. :)
do you know where to get DCC tapes?? :)
Just wondering ... my recorder has so much dust on it I can't really recognize it anymore. It would be nice to actually use it for something. Anything.

I live in the Netherlands and here i really wouldn't know but in Germany there are still DCC sold (well, sold ... you can buy em though.) And it is a 3 track it only writes two tracks and as stated above there's a third track which clears the noise...
i read it in the manual so...
i don't get how that should work though.
Ah well you can play cassettes on it so just pop on in and off you go!!!

Just to clarify....

When we call something a "2-track", the implication is that you can only record 2 channels of a signal source, and the tracks CANNOT be recorded separately (ie, record on one channel without affecing the other). Usually it is used in the context of "mix-down" machines, but it applies to any unit used to record a 2-channel signal.

Whether the media uses 3,4, or 500 tracks to accomplish "recording a 2-channel signal" is irrelevant - it is still called a 2-track!

;)

you're absolutly right... i think.
because i wouldn't know, oh yeah i'm a newbie...
ah well,
time to close up the chapter DCC.
thanks for all comments.

Hey Big K,

How ya doing, I'm still enjoying the songs we did. Hope your still pounden them skins!!

I use a dcc deck to record on, and it is two track, seems to sound pretty good to me, can't say for sure that I can hear compresion, allthough I don't have anything to compare it to. I went from a Teac 3440, to dcc when the Teac gave up the ghost. The dcc seemed to me to be a big improvement, over open reel. No more flutter on my acoustic, No more hiss, and more headroom. Hard to compain.

Anyway, as far as getting tapes, J&R Music World seemed to be the last holdout on dcc decks, and tapes. You might try there.

I'm waiting for my dcc deck to die, so I have an excuse to buy an eight track, but I've had it for about eight years, and it still works flawlessly. I've got a lot of tapes, if you can't find any, I'll send you some.
