That's great... well, I think i have to get a decent tube amp to achieve a decent distortion sound. My crate gx15 is a shame, haha.

I've notice an audible click and pops when you start to push it.. it's a cheap compressor that will serve your needs for the time being.. I put it along the lines of the Alesis 3630.. I have had this comp for awhile but fell in love with my TC Electronic Triple C's and Drawmer DL251 and Aphex 661 Tube Expressor

Do you have any recommendations in rackmount compressors?
Ive been looking at bellari stereo tube compressor. The 2 space model(500.00). I've heard good stuff about them. You may want to look at getting a channel strip (mic pre, comp, and eq). It's nice to have one good channel strip. I would look at focusrite, or amek. It's worth the money.

why would you need a compressor on distorted guitar? Most of the time the distortion is all the compression you need.

Oooohhh, I beg to differ. It's not at all unusual for me to use a compressor on a distorted guitar.

I have the 266xl...

It must not be all that distorted, or the low end jumps up everytime the player palm mutes a lower note.

Well, I'm starting to understand distorted guitars don't get benefitiated with compression. Think it's more useful for vocals or "clean" sounds, right?

Right. Anything that actually has dynamics. Heavily distorted guitar tones are compressed naturally.

In my experience, I find distorted lead lines almost always benefit from at least a touch of compression.

I think it's possible too. I used a Boss CS-3 and after a while I found that my distorted guitar sound... weird. Now I now I was putting too much compression... A couple of years I used it again and add only a bit of compression. Not much difference, but I think the compressor does its thing even if you can "hear" it. Anyway, I think it's a waste of money to get a rackmount compressor if I'm only using it for my guitar.

the 166xl was my first piece of outboard gear. I like it for bass, kick and heavier vocals. I prefer to use the waves rcomp for snare and clean vocals. overall, for the price, it was definately worth it.

doesnt at least the 266xl help with the feedback problem as well when used with distorted guitar?

dont get the 266 over the 166 unles your intention is to just use it on bar band pa ... 166 is good piece for mod/low dollar... below that....well.... doesnt really matter.. if thats the budget save acouple more dollars and get aq better one in a mon or two....until then **dream of avalons**

I use it more as an effect as anything else. It really good in a bass rack. It's not very transparent which i like.

Alot of the members like the FMR RNC arround the same price point...never heard anything bad about it...I lucked into a dbx 160 several years back.
