Damaged SP B-1

Even if there is a problem...

With Studio Projects, even if there was a problem across the board on the B1 (or any in their line), the way SP seems to operate, they'd most likely track down the problem and offer a fix. But right now, I'm loving the performance of both my B1's, and I'm also storing them in glass jars with silica gel.

Oh ok ausrock, that explains why I haven't readed any Marshall MXLV67G problems on this board.

Hey, MISTERQCUE need's to get a hold of Tubedude..... if you have his email address, maybe you can PM it to MISTERQCUE?

billisa, I haven't had any problems with my SP mic's yet either... I was keeping the B1 in a plastic ziplock with some Silica Gel packs too... but now I have it on a stand just to see how long it takes before it craps out.

One thing I wonder about is the foam used in the Marshall MXL603SPR case..... it reminds of that crap Shure used years ago that melts over time and so I replaced mine with better foam..... and I'm watching the crappy foam to see if turns green and falls apart.

I have seen problems with both Marshall and Studio Projects mics, and with one exception, they all seem to be handled well......the correct answer for the original post is to contact Alan at SP.....im sure warranty or not, hed look at it and see whats up........

this thread is headed for the Cave.....

btw, DJL, just some friendly advice.....your posts seem to me to be slanting toward anti-SP, without really addressing the topic......thats not necessary.......just my personal observation......

It was said earlier in this thread that they should contact Studio Projects about the problem...... and I also have a Marshall MXLV67G on a stand to see how long it takes before it craps out. But, I see your point.... and I'll stop telling people about any problems and etc....... and just let them find out on their own.

shhhh......shhhhh......it's ok everyone...remain calm...everything will be just fine....nobody is mad....everyone is happpy....just chill out....everybody has a point and nobody is out of line....there isn't even an argument....shhhhh...it's ok....shhhhhhh....that's it baby...shhhhhhhh....calllmmmm......shhhh

Hold on there folks! Didn't mean for my simple little thread to get all heated! Let me give you a brief update on my situation.

First off, I have now been in touch with Alan Hyatt. He has been very responsive and has offered to repair the unit for free (and please note that he made that offer long before this thread started to get out of hand). I will be taking Alan up on his offer because unfortunately the lightbulb fix did not solve my problem.

As for any reliability issues about SP or MXL mics, please be aware that I am a newbie who occasionally records on his home computer, and really have no idea what I'm doing. Therefore, it's certainly possible that (a) I could have done something to have damaged the mic which would have had the same effect it was an MXL, AKG or anything else or (b) SP will confirm that there is actually nothing wrong w/ the mic and I just screwed up somewhere else in my signal chain when I was recording vocals.

Once I get this resolved I will let everyone know (on a separate thread). I appreciate everyone's advice and discussion.

DJL, I'm just curious, where are some of the threads where people are complaining about the B1? I visit this forum nearly every day and I've never seen one before this.

I have a Neumann M149 that's set up on it's stand since 1996 and it works like a charm.

Mmmmm.........

Same Here. Mine have been up for 3 years. No Problems. But, I have no cheap chinese knockoffs.

Yeah, I have one of my 603s in CA right now for the aforementioned "ocean" sound. Just started happening out of the blue...

I might add that this thread reminded me to call and check the status. They received it this last friday and can't even look at it till this friday. It will then ship out next week "sometime". I'm looking at 3 or more weeks turnaround.

I recently bought two V93M microphones and one had an excessive noise problem. Much like the 'ocean' noise others describe. Musician's friend was prompt and curteous about allowing me to return it.

Does that mean I am going to crap all over about MXL quality? No. Stuff happens, could have happened in transit or whatever. The real measure is how well the company responds. Besides the other seem to work excellently.

Sometimes it takes a while after a product has been on the market before we start to hear about all the problems with it.

Comparing Neumann with Studio Projects is like comparing a Volkswagon with a Bently IMO.... and we get what we pay for.

I own a 68 VW bug (bought it new in the fall of 1967), and I also own two SP B-1's. Both brands have been VERY dependable. My VW is worth much more today than I paid for it when it was new, and I have a hunch the same thing will happen with my B-1's.

Oh by the way; my neighbor's Bentley is in the shop MUCH more often than my VW, Honda or Jeep.

I'm not allowed to talk about those _____________ <-- (fill in the blank) mic's anymore. :D
