this is going to be tough to explain: have you guys ever heard a song where the drummer plays a certain beat riding on a crash cymbal while hitting the bass at the same time and theres a split second where theres no sound from the crash each time the stick hits it. i love it and i wanna learn how to create it. i hear it on a sigur ros song and maybe a clutch song. its a really cool effect and i know it has to be natural because i think it happened once while my band was practicing or something.is it the bass frequency from the drum causing this or is the cymbal just slow...? its so strange.

wat sigur ros song? and when in the track.

I'll hav a listen and try and help, i dunno wat u mean at the moment. lol.

i think this might be from a combination of things...

for one, it could be from the natural movement of the cymbal while the drummer is hitting it. when the cymbal moves at a certain angle, the mic is not able to hear it as well until the cymbal bounces back to its normal position, causing a split second where the cymbal doesn't sound as loud.

combine that with some heavy compression, and it will make the cymbal sound like it is "pulsating" around the time the kick drum hits.

at least i think that's what you're talking about...

:D

i believe that is exactly what im talking about haha thanks for the info.do you think this certain movement is more attainable with a larger or smaller crash? the song is Ny batteri on Agaetis byrjun. 5th track. i dont know when it comes in because my cd player doesnt have a timer, its the heaviest part(s) of the song so just fast forward until it gets loud i guess.

i'd say with a larger crash it would have a more pronounced effect.

i hate this effect SO much. basically the bass drum is acting as a backwards gate for the cymbals.
