CUBASE VST/32 with Win98SE soundcard question

Hi

I have an opportunity to get Cubase VST/32 for Windows that was never used.

My system itself has enough specs (Win98SE / P3 600mhz / 256MB RAM), but the question is the soundcard.
I plan to use MIDI via Soundblaster onboard EMU synth and maybe upto 6 audio tracks.
Will a Soundblaster PCI-128 work with Cubase VST?

If anybody knows if it will work, or not, let me know.
If it does work, are there any limitations.

Also, I plan to get a newer soundcard eventually, but in a few months.

in a very limited way if AT ALL... thats an old prog... but you might be able to use it on an upgrade... s-b 's have a history of not working right with all kinds of gear... they just refuse to play nice together...
 
Cubase VST, although looking a little worn compared to today's offerings like SX3, is still an amazing programme for making music - enjoy it, especially as it's free! I remember paying a hefty bit for it 5yrs or so ago...

As for soundcard, I'd avoid Soundblaster cards as everyone slags them off - although I've never had one myself. I'd look for something like an M-Audio. It all depends on how much audio or MIDI you want to do. I have an old Yamaha SW1000 card, which is very limited regarding audio, but good enough for my MIDI work, which is what I do most.

You have a minimum system. You'd be better off saving up for another computer. At the least your going to need another 256Mb ram and you should get another hard drive to record to.
 
your system should be fine.. its better then what i used to use with cubase vst/32
although a ram upgrade would be nice and should be super cheap for your setup...

im also not a big fan of the soundblaster cards...

you might want to think about upgrading your OS though .. microsoft has stopped all support for 98... plus XP actually does improve audio performance.. i noticed a massive difference going from 2000 to XP ... and it should run fine on your system.. i have XP on a 500mhz (in spare parts computer)

i'm not sure if the Cubase VST is asio or not but soundblaster is not . So it might not work.

Please corect me if i'm wrong,but my SL3 does not want to comunicate with the soundblaster because its not asio.

There are asio drivers available for soundblasters and cubase is not hardware limited normally except for cubasis which I think was packaged with a soundblaster.

I've use both sb pci 64 and the original sb live 5.1 value cards along time ago and they worked fine with my cubase vst/32 on win95, win98se and win2000 professional.

By the way if your a skilled mixer working in a proper listening enviroment your should still be able to get reason good results. Even with a card like sb 128, but you would get more clarity out of a professional grade card.
