What is the learning curve like for a quasi-newbie who is used to using Cubasis? I am asking because I am planning on upgrading my software on a high school budget.

Paul - this sounds like a good move to me (I am a satisfied SE user). IT leaves Cubasis a long way behind in terms of features, so there is a lot to learn, but the basics of recording, mixing and playing back, and using inserts and sends, and MIDI programming, are straightforward and you should be up and running very quickly. You can then pick up the more exotic stuff, like beat slicing, making groove templates etc., at whatever pace you like.
SE comes only with a pdf manual (there's a very brief "getting started" paper one) which put me right off and I went and bought a 3rd party book. However now if I get stuck I open the pdf on the screen and just search for whatever bit I need - that works fine.
I use mine on a PC with an E-MU 0404 card and it has always been totally smooth and reliable. Hope that helps.

Un, there IS a paper manual that comes with Cubase SE (just picked it up myself) in addition to the pdf.
