Hey,

The band I am in is trying to decide whether to record our next album in a "real" studio, or whether to do it ourselves. We recorded a demo on the weekend and we are trying to see how good we can get it to sound... We think we are close enough to the sound we want that we would rather spend the money that it would take to go to a studio and just buy better gear to do it ourselves. We have a bunch of condensors, a few sets of drum mics, about 10 SM57s, and we track it all through a Roland VS something and then mix it in Logic. In this mix, the vocals haven't been added but we are just looking for general feedback on the sound. Obviously going to a studio would have its own benefits... but this is purely from a quality sound standpoint. Suggestions, comments, & feedback would be sweet!

Thanks

I'm no specialist, so don't take this for objective professional opinion but since you asked for any feedback.. ;)

The first thing, the guitar sounds kind of muddy, but I actually like it. If this is the sound you are aiming for then I'd still mix it to be a little more crisp.
Second, I love this crazy panning at places (listening on studio headphones makes it's even better).
Third, unless it is there for the artistic effect, gate out the noise man, cause it is taking away from the "studio" impression.

Nice playing btw.

Peace:)

I think the first mix sounded better but yeah could maybe do with some of the muddiness removing. Nice riffs you've got there I like it, quite impressive, but I couldn't help thinking the drummer.. isn't a great time keeper. It's more important to be able to play in time than to be able to do "speed drumming"

Well it is a just a demo off the floor to test the quality we can get. I actually am the drummer... I heard the song idea once before recording this and didn't have a metronome... when we do the real thing i'll definitely be using one.
