Nice guitar and sax trade offs, nice vocals, just a great job by everyone involved...... It sounds like the jukebox!:D
Gentlemen, I salute you.

I agree! A pro job all the way! :D

I have a dumb question though.. I dont record with my computer but I guess it works the same way? How would I know my beep was exact?

pro job

You have a 788 right? Does it have some kind of "move" function where you can move tracks timewise or a wave edit function? My fostex does and what I'll do ( I haven't done it yet, crawdad did this one) is import the tracks fairly close to the right time and then look at the wave form of the click and then line it up to the same spot on the timer that the wave form of the original click is at. I'm pretty sure your 788 has some similar function. If it doesn't....you could use a four count and just "earball" it. It might take twenty times to get it right but you could.
Crawdad???????? You're the guy who figured this out. Am I telling B. right? Look in your manual B. and see what kind of time editing functions you have.

BTW Sabbath, I'd like to get you to play some drums on some stuff. Would you be willing? You have my e-mail...........let me know. :)

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WAY good. Really. I wanna do collaborations too... If you want 2 alto's with a different sound... I'm right here, together with Lt Bob. Or if bob is busy... ;)

Hey Steve, my 'good' mic is a C3000b too... hehe. Also got a C419 clip on for live-work; but never compared the 2... Did a recording with an ECM8000 too, right next to the C3000b, but haven't got the time to listen it back on my monitors...

But this really is good stuff... Love the voice too. This stuff really reminds me on kindof Knopflers stuff, kinda easy going Dire Straits kinda vibe, but different... Really dig it.

oohhhh Sooo TASTY!!!

I've been way burned out on playing and recording for the better part of a month. This was the first tune to rekindle that musical ember in the gut. Thanks for sharing. Sweet and sassy all around.

Theron.

I think Lt. Bob has the handle on the non computer way to match the 2 beep. Especially if you can line up the waveform to the same point by shifting or sliding it around. Since I don't have a hardware based hard disk recorder like the Roland, etc, for me it was just a matter of putting the tracks side by side and lining up visually to the cursor (play line). If you need to check it you can play them back panned or mono and see if you hear an echo. When they are lined up properly, you should hear no echo when you play both. If you are off by a sample or two, it probably won't make much if any difference for most things.

The idea of the two beep is one I borrowed from film scoring. Editors would ask for a beep 2 seconds before picture start. They would align the track based on that beep and everything matches picture just like you intended when you scored it. When Lt. Bob and I decided to try to collaborate, he asked how we could stay in sync. I said I'd put the 2 beep as a cue on the track I send him and for him to copy that beep on whatever he sends me back.

You could do the same thing with a standard four count as long as it doesn't bleed over into the intro of your song. The way we did it gives us two seconds of silence before the track starts, which is kind of nice.

What Lt. Bob did was send me a stereo CD of my bed track and his sax. The track I sent him was panned left and his new sax was panned right. Here is how I got his sax.

1. I imported his track from the CD into Digital Performer.
2. I lined up his track to mine using the beep
3. I panned the stereo track he sent me completely right so that all I heard was the sax line--none of my guide track.
4. I bounced that stereo track as a mono track, using 3.5 db of attenuation.

Final result was his sax track alone as a mono track--in sync with the other tracks on my computer.

For you guys who record to computer, you are probably saying "Hey! I could have just added that 2 beep to a mono track or stereo track and sent it that way, which would be simpler. Thats true! I don't know if you can do that kind of stuff on a non computer hard disk system though, since I don't have one.

Anyway, its encouraging to see that there are ways to do joint projects. What I think would be fun is to write something, make a simple guide track, and pass it around--have one person play keys, another bass, another drums, etc. Then, assemble all the parts into one final master! In fact, we gotta do this!

As a long time blues man, this a rock solid collaboration, great song, superb vocals, in fact, I can't think of anything negative to write. Takes me back to John Mayalls Bluesbreakers in the 70's. The licks from the telecaster are amazing, slide guitar excellent too.

As for the NT-1.........it ain't what you got, its what you do with it that counts:)

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!
This has to happen. I propose we do that right now. I'm sending a blues track this week to 64firebird and bdgr. Firebird will do some slide work and bdgr's gonna do the keys. I'd like crawdad to do a second guitar and I'll cover the bass and sax if it's called for. The track I'll send out will be with seq drums but I'd like someone to do real drums using the same method. I also have tracks I'm doing for guernica and village idiot.

If we can get to where we casually send tracks to each other, then something important will be happening here at homerec. Think about it......all the great groups, both old and recent, have their sounds because of complementary musicianship. One person has an idea but it's not complete 'till another guy hears something the first guy didn't think of and fills in the missing piece of the musical puzzle. With the talent pool here at this BBS, there's no telling what kind of amazing music is waiting to be discovered.

Plus..................IT'S FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Lt. Bob--I'm in if needed! The term synergy comes to mind. I liked some of the solo Beatles work, but the four of them, along with George Martin, produced some things that were unbelieveable. Going it alone can work, but there is big magic in using players who specialize in what they do. I can program drums, but I'm sure a real drummer would put me to shame because he knows 100 more than me.

Anyway, I'd love to participate and be part of the revolution!

Great! Then we've got a core group to start with. For this first one I'm gonna just do some kind of blues..........maybe Toredown or Sweet home Chicago. Yeah I think Sweet Home 'cause with the breaks and all it'll give a lot of room for everyone to get to play. It'll probably be too long like most jams are but it'll be a good chance to use a bunch of people.

Viva la Revolutione!

wow!! What a great chicago song... Great sound!

you guys did a supurb job...

I love that style also

This is fantastic work! I mean everything is perfect. You guys should definitely keep this up. crawdad, your voice and guitar playing are first class. Lt. Bob, it must feel so good to actually be able to create real brass tracks. I believe you cannot substitute anything for a real saxophone. Actually what makes this sound so great to me is that everything is real (except the drums and maybe the organ I guess).

I would love to be a part of the group effort but I'm afraid I have very little to offer, backup singer, tamborine player, groupie....

Hey now...........don't underestimate the importance of a good tabourine player or groupie. They're a very underappreciated group. :D :D

Well gee, what do I say that hasn't already been said?

Such a smooth, warm sound to everything. Every instrument sounded awsome. The vocals were first rate - tracked extremely well. They just have a terrific "grittiness" to them.

Well done.

Killer tune you two!I dont know how this thread slipped past me but Im glad it got bumped back up.:D

Crawdad,
I checked out the 2 other tunes you have on Nowhere and they are top notch!Great song writing skills you got there, not to mention great vocals and guitar work.Im gonna have to start digging deeper in these threads everyday to make sure I dont miss a great tune like this again!:D

The electric guitar has way too much sustain, takes away from your mix, the rest is very well balanced (like the subtle acoustic ;) ).

This Is Ridiculous...

So I am doing this recording project now..
I take a break...I see this thread, say to myself "Hey-Crawdad and Lt. Bob did a collaboration...This should be pretty good!"

I download the song..I give it a listen...

Monday I will be donating all of my recording gear to overpriveledged children in Beverly Hills.

This is what I have been striving for and will never reach.

Thanks for an incredibly awesome tune, you two.

But up yours for the damage you have done to my ego.

:D
