Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
This is a tune I wrote awhile ago. After hearing Lt. Bob's fine sax, I thought he'd sound really cool on this one. Well, he agreed to play on it, so I sent him the bed track on Cd and he sent me back his great sax playing on another CD. I added his tracks to the tune and played some guitar, mixed etc. The song is called:

Life Number Nine

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/?aid=1522/singles.shtml

After hearing the fine job Lt. Bob did, I think he should be promoted to General or something. The fun of this is we've never met but made this music together, demonstrating the power of the home studio and the internet.

Comments are welcome!

Good swing. Kinda lounge style shit. I like this, as it makes me think of some oldie 40's Sinatra-type club thing. The vocals are excellently fitting here. The rhythm guitars are a tad quiet, but I don't mind it the way it is now. The guitar solo is tasty, and definately not over done. You sure know what fits where. Excellent work. This really gives hope about the internet collaborations. :) Wow!

excellent!

This is a great collaboration because it doesnt sound like one..

This thread will now be rated with 5 stars.....and for once, deservedly...

Nice guitar and sax trade offs, nice vocals, just a great job by everyone involved...... It sounds like the jukebox!:D

Gentlemen, I salute you.

Did crawdad write a great tune or what? Everyone should take a second to really check out the lyrics. If you're old enough to have lived part of your life in fast forward, they'll remind you of the years you partied away. :D
Crawdad.......it was a pleasure playing on this and lets hope everyone gets intrigued by the idea of online collaborations.

.........damn
...........damn
............damn,
You guys are the Bomb, if i may borrow that term from people half my age. Shit like this makes me proud to be an old fart. .......great song Crawdad, and I agree....... nobody could have done those lead vocals better. Smokin guitar work, and a smoooove sax from the mad Lt. Lt. Bob, I hope you realize you have really started something with this collaboration thing. First a killer with Sami, then this........ your gonna have to start chargin for session work. And Crawdad........man....just a great song. Dont mean to sound like im blowin fluff, but I love the live sounding mix, and the cigarette smokin style.

Great stuff fellas mike:cool:

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too bad there is no icon with TWO THUMBS UP!!!

Here is to General Bob and crawdad. (pepsi, sorry don't do alcohol :))

Crawdad is it you singing? Awesome! Levels, groove, tones (well maybe too smooth guitar, little more gritty would be cooler :) IMHO), reverb, singing. Top notch. I never rated the thread before but this one is getting 5 starts. I think it's going to get alot of raves, and it deserves so.

Thanks for sharing. Very inspiring as far as recording. And I don't care about signal chain, it sounds good. :)

cheers

Totally groovealiscious!
This song will go into heavy rotation in acidrockland!
I can't find a flaw to speak of,totally pro sounding IMHO.
If you could be so kind....could you tell me the recording chain on the vocals?

Dudes,

This is a sweet piece.

nice vocals( have a certain phat to them I cant place)
sax is off the hook and sits nicely in the mix.
Great sound on the electric

Funk on!

I like the fact that the guitar really sounds like a sax, and the sax really sounds like a guitar...especially at the end, where they each try to sound like their own instrument, by trading back and forth. That idea is just great....

:p

Wow this is really great stuff!

It's amazing you guys could do this over the web.
Man that sax and lead guitar are TIGHT!

Really great singing and guitar playing and LT.Bob cooks!

MORE,MORE!

Best to you,
Pete

Hey crawdad..........that's a great lead tone you've got. What are you playing thru? It sounds like an amp and not a modeler. If it's a modeler I want your settings.

Bad, bad, bad asses!!!!!

this makes me wanna find a sax player asap

Good job

Lt Bob--no modeling, sorry. Actually, I tried last night with my Johnson J-Station, but the sound I wanted just wasn't there. So, for this tune, here's the guitar chain. 70 telecaster, Barden pickups>MXR Dynacomp>Ibanez Tube Screamer w/808 mod> Allen Old Flame, miced with a 58 (my Beta 57 was at a gig!) into a Mackie 1202 pre to the computer. I was trying for a sound that complimented the great sax, General. (You are gonna have to change your handle, you know!)

Curious minds want to know, Lt.--what mic and pre did you use for your sax?

Oh, the vocal chain, for Acidrock. For this tune, I used Bbbb...BBbb (cough, cough) Behringer (there, I said it) VX 2000 preamp with an ART Levelar patched into it. The mic was a Marshall V93. No EQ. Effects were reverb and tap delay mixed way under the vocal. I put a gate on it to kill the sound of my computer fan in the quiet gaps! I used the levelar because I wanted an even sounding vocal track. My vocal was quiet in some parts and pinning the meters in others, so I sought some solution. It solved the problem for me.

Thanks to everybody for all the wonderful comments so far. They are greatly appreciated.

Oh, regarding collaboration. We were able to do this on totally different platforms for two reasons. First, we can burn CDs. Second, I put a short beep two seconds before the bed track, which Lt. Bob copied and included in the tracks he sent back to me. Since I have a computer DAW, I just imported his tracks and lined up that beep with the original. That way his sax parts were in sync with my original tracks. The cool thing about this is that it doesn't matter if you have a Mac or a PC. As long as you can burn CD's and import audio tracks, all these computer platforms can work together. Its food for thought.

Next to last, I was so pleased because Lt. Bob, thanks to his taste and musical skill, was able to make something out of this song that I couldn't have done alone. I think about all the talented people here who play a big variety of instruments and I think, "this could be a great thing for a lot of people. Imagine sending your track to a great drummer, bass player or whatever you can't really do and doing what you can do really well for somebody else in return." Theres alot to learn and a lot to share, in theory.

OK. Last--my tip of the hat to The Real Waldo and Nowhere Radio for allowing this music a place to live--and to Homerecording.com for making this and so many other exchanges possible. These people need huge kudos and an outpouring of thanks for what they allow us to do. Thank you all.

I didn't think it was a modeler...........just sounded too quick for that. I have all the main modelers ( a pod, a v-amp and a j-station) and while they're great, nothing quite sounds like an amp.

I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ and I'm just using the pre-amp in the board. My mic is a..........oh lord, I hate to say it........................NT-1..... Sorry.
I swear I bought it before I started coming to the BBS. Just to make you laugh, my other "good" mic is an AKG C-3000. A couple of good buying decisions huh? I have SM-57s but I like the large diaphram sound for sax even if it's the NT-1 (whew.....it gets easier to say). I'm not using any compression at all........just kept an eye on the meter.

I second crawdads' thoughts on the talent level here at homerec. Now that crawdad has shown me how to collaborate regardless of platform, I just want to play with everyone here. Think of it..........a 13,000 member session group. That's so cool it gives me chills. ;)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well now that has just made my day!

absolutely positively great!

the pair of you, thanks for that.

Its so crisp, so clean, so pro! your voice sounds like a kind of Tom Jones grittyness. Its really outstanding. I love every minute of this and that sax, well brilliant. I want to here this tune on the oceans 11 sound track or another swingers movie. outstanding! I really like that organ and the swinging bass is so good.......

I enjoyed that. I thought the saxophone got a bit hot every now and then, but the playing was top notch. I liked the vocalist also. Simply perfect for the style. Nice job fellows.

Great Job!

This tune kicks ass! It has a totally cool groove to it! Amazing that you guys collaborated and got it to sound so great without communicating one-on-one. You guys totally had the right vibe going and this tune really sounds great!

Lt. Bob's horns really add a new dimension to this tune and brings it to life!

Great job!

Pro quality top to bottom. Man, that sax just growls. What did you mic it with?

Thanks Trackrat. Crawdad's song made it easy. Believe it or not.............I miced my sax with a (drumroll please).....................................................NT-1!
I know, I know. I swear I bought it before I started coming to homerec. :)

Sounds good to me. I would have guessed a ribbon of some kind. The top end has no harshness I can detect. Killer!
