Could Bellari Tube Pres be a Darkhorse?

and how would you know which tube to use?

you would use just burr browns, since it appears they only make one thing?

and the Jenson JT-10K61-1M Transformer?

* Jensen JE-115 transformer

* Burr-Brown 2604

* 12AX7 Tubes could be replaced by a number of different options.

ok, thta makes sense now. this would be the mic in to high impedance. would you have to do another one to get the impedance back down to low impedance at the end of the chain?

Oh yeah, I e-mailed a guy asking for a picture. You never know.

Out of curiosity, do you know which dbx tube pres have the starved-plate design and which ones use the real tube amp design? I'm wondering because this dude I know wants to sell me four dbx mini pres for 50 bucks each.

The dbx ones you want are the pretty blue ones with the kewl aluminum knobs. Unfortunately, you won't find them for $50.

I have no idea. And as far as sovtek versus groove tubes, I've heard good things about both. Groove tubes maybe a little cleaner and Sovtek maybe a little more colored.

So I would want groove tubes if I wanted something that wouldn't sound like a peavey VMP-2?

Chess,

I would give it a shot. I am a Senior Technician with excellent soldering skills. I have the soldering tools required to do a pro job. Without a schematic I would hesitate to do more mods than done in the link provided. Shoot me a email or pm and we can talk. My control room is undergoing a remodel and I have some time. Of course I would like to record some acoustic stuff with it before and after the mods to hear the difference. Let me know. Sounds fun.

Cool. Will do.

Update: I called Texas Instruments and they'll be sending me "samples" of the Burr-browns. I told them I was working on a major design that would probably sell 10's of thousands of units per year, so they'll be sending to me for free. :) I couldn't get Jensen to bite on that one, unfortunately. They told me they'd send me 30-day demos I'd have to send back. Damnit! And that's the most expensive part. Couldn't get Groove Tubes to bite on it either. Oh well, looks like I'll have to shell out the $15. :)

I wonder if you could stick a Burr brown in a Tube MP? Anybody know?

I've tried sticking my c*&%k inside one, but I got electrecuted, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Seriously, though, you can, and a lot of people have done it (along with replacing the cheap tubes), and it supposedly makes a pretty noticeable improvement. The main problem with the ART MP's, ufortunately, is in the power supply from what I gather. Any modifications to that would get you in to a lot greater complexity that may/may not be worth the trouble.

Chess,

I am headed home and will email you. I might be able to get a buyer here to get a sample from Jenson. Maybe a billion dollar company can get a better response. Who knows? Worth a shot though. I would try for some for me too:)

Bellari Mod

Uh...are you guys gone measure anything before and after to see if you did any good? Subjectively, you KNOW it will sound better after the mods--it HAS to after all that PITA, provided of course the thing still powers up :D

I heard putting burr browns in a sytek gives it a more silky sound, not really relevant, but i just thought of it.

..I wonder if there's some way to make the Marshall MXL2001 sound good?

Since the Bellari is a high voltage design, you might give some thought to not trying that trick again! LOL :D

Actually, our guinnea pig will be a 2-channel, so the plan is to modify only one of the channels, leave the other one alone, and then do some samples of each. Let them go head-to-head and duke it out.

Hey Kirk,

Who do you work for, if you don't mind my asking?

No biggy

Hi,

I work for Plexus, in Bothel Wa. we are a contract Eng / Mfg. company. We used to be SeaMed but were bought by Plexus out of Neena Wisconson. We do design, proto builds, and small pre production / production runs. I work on a ultrasonomter for determining bone density in women, a PNT device for eliminating lower back pain and surgery, and a left ventrical assist device to buy some people with heart probs more time. Thats about it. Thank god I went to a recording school that taught me electronics too. :)
