A few questions about it.

Anyone use one?

What did you use it on?

Why would you use a copperphone?

Does it REALLY look that much like a terrorist threat? (if it does, that's a plus... I guess)

i've never used one, but you could check out some M. Ward stuff to hear how it can be used to great affect.

mark pirro, who designed the mic, also plays bass in the polyphonic spree. you can check out some of their stuff to hear it in action on vocals. tim, their singer, uses it live quite often. mark is a good guy and a whiz with mics. i believe his email address is on their webpage (placidaudio.com), and he's very good about answering questions personally.

Good points, as I am a fan of M Ward and like some of the Spree. Maybe this is a matter of taste (as whether or not to use comp based effects) but it seems you can get that effect easily without shelling out $250. I like the idea of the mic but cant reason around the price. Maybe if I had an endless supply of money and already owned all other mics. It would be fun to have and, of course, you could replicate that sound live with the mic.

yeah, i've eyed that mic for a while. if it cost $89, i'd already have one. not that $250 is crazy expensive, but it's such a special effect thing, i just can't validate spending the money. but a cool product none-the-less.

I think it is a good sunscreen that has a long history.

BTW: Terrorists don't use sunscreen!

it's definitely a mic to get for live usage. you could get very close to it in the studio via eq, etc. (although there are some very cool nuances to the mic's sound that you'd have a hard time trying to replicate with plugins or outboard gear, hence "close"). that said, it's a niche mic. if you're looking for something that's going to be a go-to workhorse, stop looking at this. if you've already got a pretty impressive mic collection and are looking for new and interesting colors for your pallette, then this is DEFINITELY a mic to be considering.

I agree with you 100% but would add on that it is a must have if you have a bottomless wallet as well. I think they are cool for what they do and sound fairly cool but, truth be told, I dont have a large arsenal of mics, I have about 5 or so (and one is out of comission). I aslo agree that if the price were lower, I might pick one up for live use but it'd have to be about $40 for me!
