converting 16/44 to 24/96?

Alright well I was planning to record a mic into a Boss BR1180 at the same time as four other mics going into my aardvark direct pro 24/96 so I could mic both toms on my drum set. I would then transfer the one audio track from the BR1180 to the PC (prolly S/PDIF) and then mix them all together (two overhreads modified spaced pair, one kick, two toms).

However I found out today (with much searching actually) that the Boss is actually only capable of recording in 16 bit and 44khz. I definately want to record with my Aardvark at 24/96.... So my question is is there a way you can convert a 16/44 file to 24/96 without making it sound bad? It doesn't have to sound stellar or anything I'm just going to mix it in with the rest of the drums (otherwise i wont be able to mic the toms and i think ill lose them with the cymbals and snare etc) but I don't want it to sound BAD.

Should I just give up on the BR1180 and just use four mics to mic the drum set? Or would converting them to 24/96 be an okay thing to do?

Thanks (btw i use cool edit pro)

You won't be able to send a 16/44 digital signal to the aardvark when it's expecting a 24/96 digital signal.

Everyone has to be talking the same language as far as digital protocols.

Might work. Seems like you are saying you want to record that extra track onto the Boss, and then dump it in afterwards. May be some sync issues with the track lining up, some editing could do you right.

As far as sample rate, it may not matter if your just trying to import it in to the project afterwards. With Vegas, all the conversions just happen automaticaly on playback, I don't have to have eveything recorded at the same sample rate or bit depth.
For exaple I'll do scratch tracks at 16/44.1 then just change my properties and start recording at 24/96, and they'll all play nicely together. I'm not 100% CEP does this. It certainly should. If it dosen't, just convert it up, you wont here a difference.

Yeah I think you misunderstood me Blue Bear. I will record the 5th mic to the BR1180 and then LATER send it to my computer via S/PDIF or CD. Then import it (and i guess convert it) to the song with the other 4 mics. And yes I am prepared to do a little editing to get all the tracks to line up.

That sounds great! I was hoping the quality wouldnt suffer when converted.

Thanks for the input!

the bit depth change will not be noticeable because there is no change to the audio data other than just adding 8 more zeroes to the end of every sample. however, even upsampling, if you are an audiophile it is possible to hear a slight difference, since 44.1 and 96 do not divide nicely. the difference becomes much more apparent when going from 24 to 16 bit, since you are essentially chopping off the last 8 bits, or downsampling from 96 to 44.1 because of the loss of resolution (and some very very high-end content, perhaps, but that's another issue altogether).
