Controller edit

I do not seem to be able to use the graphical controller edit section. I have read and re-read the manual on this. The manual says that when working with audio files that certain catergories..ie volume and pan for each audio channel should be available by default...but I don't seem to have anything available on the controller edit...all I get is the greyed out audio image. The same when working with midi except I do get velocity and pan but nothing else. All the controllers are there except none have the black dot next to them on the list. Is there something simple that I am missing here (probably).?

Yeah. Pleeeeezzz someone say i can somehow edit midi controllers in cubase but that i'm simply too daft to find out how. It's killing me.
Waste of money if i can't :(
