Musorgsky??.. or whatever... Did that tune about the bare mountain with all sorts of devils?..
Most of Operas and symphonies are full of deicide, murdering, incest, plotting and other works of the old Morning Star anyways??... :D

Yes, Night on Bald (or Bare) Mountain by Modest Moussorgsky. It was part of the sound track for Fantasia, and it gave me nightmares when I saw it as a kid.

Which part of Fantasia?

It's the second to last piece, right before the Ave Maria. The animation begins at sunset over a village with a craggy mountain peak behind it. The top of the mountain kind of unfolds as some giant demon (Satan, maybe) sitting at the summit unfolds his leather wings. Then there is a lot of fire and tormented souls (if you look closely at them, you'll see images that are very un-Disney-like). The piece ends with sunrise chasing all the small beings back underground and the big guy folding his wings over his head and morphing back into the mountaintop. It was very scary to me as a kid.

"The flipside [to Black Metal is] White Metal or Christian Rock; most famous example being Stryper, one listenable example being Mass, only brilliant example being Trouble, who worship at the Church of Suicidal Christianity. Usually a scarier proposition than black metal."

-Martin Popoff

Well hey now, devil worshipping is as close to christianity as anything else. I mean, you figure at least the devil worshippors are acknowledging God, and that Christianity is valid, they are just on the other side of the whole allegiance thing. A lot of other religions don't even recognize Christianity as being valid. So, maybe Christians and devil worshippors could be friends somehow.

Yep - the devil worshipers have just picked a different side, and decided that all the fun people go to hell. ;)

Let the religious persecution begin.

Talk about immaculate conception! I just got a anonymous negative rep - quite possibly from the Savior Himself.

Well, that Bach guy sure was on the whole Jesus bandwagon, and he could write him up some music. I don't think there are any examples of bands that are on the other side of the spectrum that can compare with that.

But hey, what else did Bach have to do, I mean, if he had been any different he would have gotten a beating and not much work for a demon worshipping musician back in the day. It is kind of ironic that some of the most quoted "evil" sounding music comes from a guy who entitled each piece to God in a different (often dumb) way. Like "to the kindest God of Earth." And then "to the savior of humanity."

Man...life must have been boring back then,...no wonder bach had time to write a bunch of great music. :D

Bach isn't "religious" music. No one was that lame back then. Many are that lame now, unfortunately. Just because a guy has faith in any given religion, that doesn't mean his music is religious. I've never heard a piece of "religious" music that I liked. And for the record "Jesus is just alright with me"...........shitty song, imo. I don't knock Jesus or Christians or anything else religious with the exception of religious music. It's lifeless, boring, predictable, and very UNAUTHENTIC.

Watch out, Travis, there is an anonymous fundie giving out red chicklets! :D

I don't care. I'll stick a pair of cheetos formed in a crucifix in his ass. :D

Well I don't know if that's true (about Bach). I mean, the sole purpose of him composing music was so that those in church could listen to his music and worship at Sunday service. He was only paid for that reason. And I would think the dedications on all his pieces would be indicitive that he felt the same, although I suppose they could have been just to appease his employers, that would probably be stretching it though.

Check this out: Sebastian's tenure in Arnstadt was not entirely successful. He was obsessed by the organ and refused to seriously practice with the boys of the church's school choir (not his official duty anyway). He got into conflict and in the summer of 1705 he even had a street fight with the bassoon player Geyersbach (after Johann Sebastian had called him names)

from here: http://www.let.rug.nl/Linguistics/diversen/bach/arnstadt.html

sounds like Bach was a bit of a rock n roller to me. :D

How about this:

Apart from repertoire for the band, Bach wrote lots of chamber music in Köthen. In 1719 he went to Berlin to get a great Mietke harpsichord for the court, which greatly stimulated his keyboard output. Bach did not have to write church music at this Calvinistic court. Interestingly, he did not seem to miss this at all because from the record it appears that he had the time of his life, just by producing chamber music in relative freedom, or by making a trip now and then to test an organ. Playboyish prince Leopold even took his musicians to Carlsbad, where he "took the waters" during the summers of 1718 and 1720. This was quite a trip (even today there is no easy route from Köthen to Carlsbad (in the current Czech Republic)).

It sounds like to me, the church thing was a series of necessary gigs (maybe the only gigs around).

One more bit:

Apart from the declining musical situation in Köthen, Bach was seeking another position in connection with the educational needs of his sons (letter to Georg Erdmann, 1730). Another common biographical interpretation is that Bach wanted to write vocal church music again, hence his intererest in the Hamburg and Leipzig positions. Some biographers even associate this alleged new interest in church music with the death of Bach's first wife. There is almost no evidence, however, that Bach saw church music as his true vocation. Although he certainly wrote a lot of church music, his purely instrumental output was much more constant and spread over a much larger part of his life. The documentary record seems to show that Bach's applications were almost always motivated by a down-to-earth desire to improve his position, musically, but certainly also in terms of prestige and, above all, money. It should also be noted that his flirtation with the Margrave of Brandenburg had nothing to do with church music.

Bach was a rocker. :D He used the church money, education, fame, and experience. He wanted to be the best musician that he could be.

If you go on the premise, from the Christian thread, that by definition religious music has to have religious lyrics, then you can actually make an argument that Black Sabbath wrote pro-religious music:

From "After Forever" on Master of Reality

Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope - do you think he's a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light and I've changed my ways
And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of our days

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
that God is the only way to love

Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve

Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.

Of course, you may not be a fan of this song, which keeps you on your streak, but it's not even remotely shitty IMO
