Hi!
Does anyone know a way to connect the VS880 to the PC?
I mean digitally, or via SCSI.
We have a Terratec EWS64XL Soundcard with S/Pdif inputs and outputs, and Optical input.
How can we sincronize them?

Thanx

Connectin to upgrade the vs880ex operating system

I just updated my operating system on my vs-880ex by configuring my joystick port as mpu4, then buying a midi adapter (midi-man) at the local music store. From there i connected it to the vs-880ex midi in port. Installed a program called "updSMF that is located at "midi-it.com.. The update files are on "rolandus.com" in thier software update thread. The instructions with UpdSMF were clean and simple. To set the roland up to recieve the files is in the owners manual. the whole process only took about 30 min".

I havent tried transfering analog yet but I asume it can be done by connecting the line out of the vs-880 to the line inon the sound card. Some signal loss but should work. Also might try connecing the digital out of the vs880 to a s/pdf on the sound card for complete transfer of digital information. I think you will need a software program on the cojputer to be able to handle the input.

Hope this gives you some directions to look for more expert info. this digital recording stuff is fairly new to me. So the above is just suggestions.

For both in and out you need two 75 ohm coaxial spdif cables. You have to have the same sample rate in order for it to work. Press "system" and go to "sys system prm" and press yes. press parameter and go to "sys masterclk=" Then use the time/value dial to select "digital" Then press display and its ready.

If the display indicates "digital in unlock" A digital audio signal is not being sent from the external digital audio device/ or / the sample rate of the external digital audio device differs from the sample rate of the song. Make sure thats its sending a signal and check the sample rate.
As doc mentioned you will need software to track too. Cool edit, cakewalk, ntrack to name just a few. All are widely used and even have forums here.

sync via midi

Hey, it looks like you got the digital sync down, but now ya need to synchronize it via midi, so they both start, stop , and play in time.

When sending Audio digitally via spdf, you can only send 2 tracks at a time. In order to get all 8 tracks, you must make 4 passes with both the program and vs-880 in sync.

The theory is that the Computer program will be the MMC master. The VS-880ex will be the MMC slave. The VS-880ex will be the MTC master. The Computer Program will be the MTC slave.

1. System/MIDI, and set MMC to Slave.
2. System/Sync Tempo, Sync Gen: MTC.

3. Set Computer Program to Send MMC.
4. Set Computer Program to Slave to MTC.

This will allow you to use the transport of the computer while keeping the VS clock as the master.

Hope this helps,
Gen MIDI
