Connecting Alesis M1 Active monitors to Alesis Studio 12R mixer

I'm wondering if my connection is endangering my monitor speakers. Currently I'm using the gadget labs wave 8/24 soundcard with my Alesis 12R mixer to record. Recently I purchased the Alesis M1 Active monitors. The monitor output on the 12R is +4dbu. The monitor manual says this is a balanced signal and should be used with xlr cables. However, the 12R only has 1/4" outputs. Am I putting my speakers in danger by using unbalanced Monster speaker cables?

ok...thank you...is there any disadvantage to using the unbalanced cables?

They're quieter, from what I've experienced.
