I'm trying to get my recording setup working with the 2496 (goodbye soundblaster).

Here is what I have:

2 Microphones
Audio Buddy
Audiophile 2496
Presonous HP4 headphone amp
Creative 2.1 desktop speakers

I would just like to be able to record, monitor, and playback music on the computer.

Can someone please guide me through this? I'm pretty desperate.

I know how to hook the audio buddy into the RCA jacks on the 2496, but that's all.

The next step would be to get the Audiophile's outputs connected to the headphone amp's inputs. Then get the headphone amp's monitor/thru outputs connected to the speaker inputs.

Then we'll have to figure out what software you're using to record, and that will determine the following steps. I assume you already have the drivers for the Audiophile installed, and have at least fiddled with the Delta Control Panel a bit to see how it works.

Thanks DonF.

How would I go about hooking it up to the Presonus HP4 Headphone Amp?

Which output on the 2496 do I connect to the headphone amp?

Also, my speakers (not monitors) hook into a subwoofer. The subwoofer has a stereo 1/8" jack just like my headphones. The speakers are powered by the subwoofer since the sub has a power adapter of its own.

I'm guessing I could hook the speakers, (or actually the sub) into the headphone amp just like I can the headphones?

Also, I'm using Reaper to record.

Thanks again I hope I can get this working soon. :)

For this, you'll need a cable with RCA plugs on one end, and 1/4" TS plugs on the other end. (This would do the trick: http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--HOSCPR20. Be sure to get one that's long enough.) Connect the L and R outputs on the Audiophile to the LEFT and RIGHT inputs on the headphone amp.

This might be a little more tricky. You certainly could use one of your headphone outputs, but you might also consider using the MONITOR/THRU outputs on the back of the headphone amp. But then you'd have to find or build a cable with two 1/4" TS plugs on one end, and a 1/8" stereo jack on the other end. Also, since the speakers are designed to connect to a headphone output, the line-level output from the Audiophile might not drive the speakers' input very well. So, the lowest-risk approach for you (assuming that you don't need to drive four pairs of headphones) would be to use one of your headphone outputs. A 1/4" stereo plug to 1/8" stereo jack adapter is not hard to find.

Thanks Don that makes perfect sense.

I'm a little confused by this.

So you're saying the output from the headphone amp (headphone out) might not be enough to drive the speakers?

And that I should try using the monitor thru output instead? But I will need a special cable for this?

Also, I thought I'd attach a picture of what the subwoofer looks like on the back and how the speakers hook up and everything.

Hopefully it makes sense.

Thanks again.

No, the headphone out should work fine. Just that you might not want to dedicate one of your headphone outputs to driving the speakers, and might instead consider letting the Audiophile drive the speakers using the "monitor/thru" output of the headphone amp.

Yes, and that cable might be difficult to find. (But it wouldn't be hard to build.)

The green cable in your picture -- is it hardwired into the subwoofer, or does it have a plug that connects to a jack on the subwoofer? If it has a plug, it will be easier to find a cable to connect to it.

It's not hardwired. I can plug/unplug it. :)

Ok.

Well I only plan on having a pair of headphones plus my speakers hooked up at once. I don't plan on using all headphone jacks on the headphone amp.

The most I would ever have is 2 pairs of headphones plus my speakers, but I would be fine with just speakers and 1 set of headphones.

Also, I have no experience with building cables. I'm confused by all the different connections.

Could you possibly draw a quick little picture showing what kind of cable I would need?

You've already helped me out a great deal. Thanks. :)

So, it's not hardwired. In other words, the green cable has a 1/8" stereo plug on each end, right?

If you want to use the MONITOR/THRU jacks on the headphone amp, you'll need a cable with two 1/4" phone plugs on one end, and a 1/8" stereo plug on the other end. Here's one: http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--HOSCMP15.

If you just want to connect a headphone output to the speakers, use an adapter with a 1/4" stereo plug and a 1/8" stereo jack (e.g., http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--HOSGPM103). Connect the green cable to that adapter and plug the 1/4" plug into one of the headphone outputs.

That's correct. One green end on each side of the cable (which is a stereo 1/8" like headphones).

Ok, thanks. :)

So you think either one would work okay? Hooking the speakers up via headphone out / MONITOR THRU?

Last question, I promise. ;)

Most likely, yes. In general, computer speakers work OK whether driven from a line-level output or from a headphone output. They might be slightly less noisy if you use the MONITOR/THRU jacks, but probably not enough for you to notice. You also get the convenience of the mute button.

I saw this in the user manual: "The HP4 has the potential to be very loud (it goes to 12)."
