I am recording at home. Currently I just a SM57 into an M-Audio DMP3 which then goes to my soundcard, and M-Audio Audiophile 2496.

I am interested in getting a large diaphragm condensor mic. I was leaning toward the Rode NT1A but the guy at my local store advised me to consider the Audio Technica 3035 also. While price shopping I also noted that the AKG C-2000B seems to be in the same class.

I have read the Sound on Sound reviews of these mics, and some of the older threads on this forum. Things change so fast in the market, however.

As of today, July 2005, what do folks here see as the differences between these options? Which would you recommend? Should I consider something else also?

Thanks for your help.

I am a fan of C2000B. It is actually a small diaphragm mic in a larger housing than is usually used with SD's. It is a pretty good vocal mic, actually excellent on some voices, but also has a myriad of applications for percussion and instruments. It is one of the most versatile mics I know of under $200.-Richie

I think C2000B is very good on acoustic, but it has a sair amount of color to it. It's often my mic of choice for a less expensive guitar. For Martins and Taylors, I often choose C414 or Neumann KM184, but we're talking about sub- $200 mics here.- Richie

You may also want to consider the Studio Projects C1 or TB1. For the money (around 200) they are excellent buys for vocals and acoustic guitar. I have worked with the C1 and I liked it, and I own a B1. Sounds good through the DMP3!

Think about it!

Carl

OK, good advice...I'll look into the C1 and think about the other advice. What do folks think about the NT1A, however?

Last chance to save me from a bad buy

Thanks for all your advice. I am buying soon. I am leaning toward the Rode NT1A. I re-read all the reviews in Sound on Sound, and he just gives it a great review. The Studio Projects B1 also gets a very good review, so I might go with that if I am feeling miserly when I get there!

Anyone else have any advice for me?

I have used the RODENT1A for vocals, for the past year and 1/2. I think it is a great mic for $200. I recently moved up to a couple C414's. Walter
