Studio Projects C1. Blasted thing keeps making noises like a windy day on the coast, and then just stops working all together. Depending on the day, it'll work fine, then starts playing up again.

Anyone familiar with this?

Sounds like what I'd expect if an op amp's voltage supply went slowly to zero. Does this occur with other phantom-powered mics or just that one? Have you tried it with a different mixer and/or cable? Beyond that... maybe a wire coming loose or an oxidized contact somewhere?

I had a problem like that with one of my Rode NT5's. I don't know what caused the problem, but they sent me a new pair a couple of weeks later.

Thanks. Unfortunately the "shit" as you call it - I call it "demo now on hold" - happened in Japan. Does your after sales excellence stretch as far as here?

if it happens depending on the day then it might be a moisture problem search the archives for solutions, japan can be extremely humid which could lead to condensation on the capulse. The condensation problem is exasberated by getting 'up close and personal' with the mic.

[edit] here I saved you the trouble of searching

Good points well made, but my Rode NT1 doesn't play up at all. Then again, she isn't as sexy as C1, which means I probably don't get up close and personal with it quite as much...

....are all reliable condenser microphones ugly then?

Correct, placing the capsule under a 100watt light bulb for four to five hours will dry out the capsule. You can try this. Place it two inches away from the bulb with the front side of the capsule(Where you sing into) into the heat.

After five hours, let the mic sit for about two hours and then try it out....

Alan, thank you very much for the assistance. I'll get back to you.

And will try the 100w light bulb trick, too.

Cheers, impressed.
Robin.
