The purpose of this post is two-ply. First to honor our friend w/o a 'puter, S8-N. Well- him and Sam Adams: Brewer. Patriot. Drunk.
Second is to show the kind of detail I've been getting with a better mic. It really became noticeable when I opened up this .wav file in Sound Forge, then zoomed it right down to 1:1 display on the waveform. I thought I had lost my mind or the system had crashed until I saw that I was already zoomed out to 1:1. Where I'm usually accustomed to seeing waves that are two inches wide on my monitor I now see detail of waves that are less than a 1/16" of an inch wide for the whole sine pattern. In other words, a high end that's capturing some detail. You can tell me about the low end.
The mics (2 NT-1s) were placed in my living room and my computer fan sounded like a hydroelectric plant.
The source was 20 feet away from the mics.

It's at my website, 0:53, a 1661 KB 256Kbps .mp3 file- "it is raining in hell" from the mp3 gallery.

Ha ha ha ha, you shook it more than twice too, so ya know what that means! my wife's going...thought this was a song you d/L I say but it is honey "it is raining in hell" I'm just glad it wasnt #2!

That you could say that with confidence is testimony to the beauty of these mics!

drstawl,
There may be a leak in your plumbing at home. Those condensers are incredible. Yesterday I was trying to do some background ooooohhhh vocals, and all I could here was my stomache making gurgling noises because I just ate a jelly roll that was a couple days old. I had a hard time recording because I was giggling too much.
I think TCP is a very brave and adventurous and happy cat after looking at some of the pictures.
Can't wait to hear some of your vocals with this new mic!

Of course I was on my third cup of coffee when I heard this so I had to take a little break......

A five-minute download for a tinkletune. Sigh... You are a rascal.

Yes, sensitive mics, aren't they? Now you'll understand why I'm so interested in ribbons.

Dobro:
Five minutes ain't too bad. 5.5 KB/sec.
Please accept my apologies if you even remotely felt this was pure pranksterism.
Partially so- hence the dedication to S8-N.
Open up the file in a .wav editor and see what I'm talking about. Yeah- I could've demonstrated <that> with a 5 second clip instead of the 53 that I used, but I wanted the clip to have a beginning, a middle and an end to impart a storyline to the soundtrack.
Plus, even 160KB on a 56K line is a pain in the ass and getting a 5 second clip seems to leave me with an "empty" feeling.
Later that day, a sloshed buddy showed up at the door. I had the mics set up and Vegas running, so I just hit record and produced my own Firesign Theatre piece. It sucked up nearly 200MB by the time I shut it off.
We listened to it 3 times. Some funny stuff.
The next day it wasn't quite as funny.
I can play editor, too.

I'm impressed, man.

You can not only pee for that long, but for a distance of 20'?!

I always knew you were a pisser!

I played it for a drummer I know and he swore there was was a vibraphone accompaniment at the very beginning. I told him (truthfully) that it was just the natural sound of the porcelain.
Dragon: I strive for accuracy, not just distance or volume.
Monty: No, but I applied there once. They've got a really cool location in Irvine.

Just wondered as you are in that area. I did work there for a while about 9 or 10 years ago. It was a wonderful commute from Arcadia, NOT. At least there was a van pool.
