I would like some mic suggestions for recording distorted guitar. I am looking for a more airy sound Than a dynamic produces in distant micing.
Thanks

Royer R121 or even 122. Sounds HUGE on guitars no matter where you put em:)

Km184 .. 'air'
MXL v69ME .. coloured

I prefer the above for condensers but al decent mics can do the job..., mic placement is the key. the placement differs per mic

The best mics for distorted guitars would be the Shure SM57. It is THE studio standard and every single studio worth its salt uses it all the time.

You could try the SM58 also as it is a SDC mic capable of +48V headroom with the proper mixer. I recommend XLR cables as they are fully balanced and are made to be compatable with digital recordings.

Good luck and see you at the "docks"!

I don't agree with the 57 being the studio standard, more the studio stand around. AT 3035 or 4033, senn 421 is airy, I like a tube too ( GT, NTK, AKG solid tube) I have heard people having some sweet sounds with ribbons as well

Most studios own a number of SM57's, does that make the 57 a 'standard'?

Also most studios own Sennheiser MD421's which is one of the most popular multi purpose mics on the planet.

The 421 beats the 57 on most applications. It sounds bigger, more airy and the high end is nicer.

I still can't figure what's so good on the 57.

The SM57 is a high-end studio mic that has all the freq response that is needed. The MD421 is a "budget" mic. The MD421 is OK for woodwind instruments and the occasional accordian. Radio Shack mics are made by the same company. Shure has pro mics that are used in every studio in the world. You should try one and see the outcome on your own recordings. If the SM57 doesn't work for you, than I may suggest an upgrade in your mixer, pre-amps or both. You should also go digital with Pro-Tools for outstanding sound. Analogue is just too noisy to extract the performance from the SM57.

Good Luck!

Woohaaahhh, the MD421 is a 'budget' microphone? and the SM57 is a hi end mic??

My mixer need an upgrade??? (have you visited my website????)

And do you really think PT sounds better than the combination of my board and the two inch?????

Analog is too noisy for the 57?????? Is the SM57 a digital microphone???????

Enlighten me phuleeze.

You're a funny guy.

FWIW, Sennheiser makes the MD421 for some 50 years now and this microphone is one of the best dynamics one can get and the more expensive MD441 is probably the best dynamic mic ever.

Beyer is another company that makes hi end dynamic mics and another company is Electrovoice that makes dynamic mics that are among the best.

IMHO (you may disagree, no problem) the SM57 is a mediocre, inexpensive but versatile dynamic mic that cannot compete with the more expensive MD421/441, M88, M201, PL20 and RE20, to name a few.

Thanks

I think you are a bit confused. The 57 is a great all-around budget mic ($90). I have not had the pleasure of working with a MD421, but it is wodely considered a superior mic for most applications. Also, how is $300+ budget, while $90 is not? I'm not trying to be a dick, I just don't want other people misled.

Believe it or not, sm57's can be found on more guitar amp tracks than not. They may not be the only one used, but most of the time are there. At $79 a shot, you almost can't afford not to have a few.

I can afford not to have a few. In fact, over time I've sold off all but one. I now have only one that I keep around as a spare talkback / scratch vocal mic.

I sold my one and only 57 a few weeks back. I don't miss it at all.
